But I have no idea who she is.
Cincinnati Comic Expo held at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Static Guy is a local steampunk celebrity known for his impressive beard and moustache. He was at the Expo to promote the upcoming Pandoracon, an event you don't want to miss if you are into steampunk or other types of dress-up or geekdom. Check out their web site:
I made it back from NYCC alive. Had a grand time. Will talk about it in a bit. So much work to do. Am so behind. Cannot apologise enough.
HOWEVER.
I had a good chuckle.
I have to address the author of this fine piece of literature. Alex, I am the guy in the top picture you chose. I'm guessing you got it from a comic book related website, since that's what I generally do. So you're probably a geek. And a girl. I admire that. Geekdom needs more ladies. Embrace the geek. Even if you have no idea who the hell I am. ( I don't really know some times myself, ).
I am Australian. I have no idea about American frat boy culture, douchey or otherwise, apart from what I see on TV and movies. To me it's quintessentially American and rather cro-magnon. The most I did in university was stay at the bar too long when I should have been attending a lecture. No frat parties or these clubs men all go and rub their half naked bodies over each other while consuming kegs of cheap nasty toilet water ( What Australians call American beer ) Frat boys and their little clubs always came off as rather homosexual to me. Not that there's *anything* wrong with being homosexual, I might add. It's all a bit US military contractor for me really. Since that's what they actually do with US taxpayer dollars, over at Xe ( Blackwater ). Not really my style. Just give me a few tequila shots and I'm likely to leave amusing messages on other people's phones because they think my accent is funny.
So, to address some of the finer points up for discussion in your article:
I wear suits. ( As in that image you've used. ) They are custom made for me, by a tailor. I also have cobra skin shoes custom made from a cobbler, if you're interested. I've even appeared on a fashion blog. Go figure. Life is strange that way.
I drink GUINNESS. This is not Coors Light, or Bud, or any of that pissant crap "macho" dudes can actually get drunk on. I mean, I drank shit beer at Uni but at least it wasn't that filth.
I DO smoke cigars. With guys. ALSO, with women. Women smoking cigars is AWESOME by the way. Sometimes Most of the time, they are also CUBAN. ( The cigars, not the women ) and yes, I do slightly consider myself of a little more class and means than the average young pup American frat boy who likes to get blind drunk and poke anything that moves with his probably less than average flacid man-meat in the brief period between drinking too much light beer and passing out with his shirtless, probably pantless piece of pudge lying on the floor ready for his friends to shave the eyebrows off of.
In short, you picked the perfect person to headline your article. Great job! I'll be posting this, or some other snarky type of rant, over on my blog. Because this has amused me no end. I apologise for all the traffic this article may get. It's not because it was particularly popular or anything. Obviously, it's because of the photo of me. I tweeted it because I think it's awesome. Which it is. And now I'm blogging about it because, well, I never in my life thought I'd wind up on a site like "College Candy" which already sounds soft porn enough to me. Please feel free to use any other pictures of me you may find. Many are taken by fans. And yes, I am in bars a lot, so there's plenty of fodder if you want to write anything on drunken artsy Aussies who draw comics and such.
But, you see, that picture was taken by my friend, Aaron Munter. He'd love a credit. Maybe you got it from his flickr even? Cheers. I'm kind of miffed you couldn't find an image of me for every single catagory you wrote about. The sad thing is, you probably COULD. I've stood on top of school buses while flipping off passers by. I've danced in front of "God Hates Fags" types in a suit & I've had my arse painted on in front of a large group of people.
Mucho love, please make me your frat boy mascot or something. It'd be a lot of fun. Maybe I can even tour South Carolina, riding a giant keg? think of the possibilities. You'll have created a monster, Alex.

I need everyone's honest opinion. Would I be going too far into photography geekdom if I bought my own sun reflector for outside portraits? I need to know. I already have too many geek labels as it is.
Okay, this is sort of weird and fanboyish so it deserves an explanation.
I took a bunch of pictures in order to review the BA 2010 Sci-Fi pack. One of the ones I took was this one, in which I threw a bunch of BA in a pile and stuck a gunblade into it.
As I was post-processing, it sort of--appropriately, given the gunblade--reminded me of Final Fantasy. When I realized that 2010 was MMX in roman numerals, I got an idea for something to put at the top of my post and it all sort of went downhill from there.
If by "downhill" you mean doubling down on the geekdom.
Makibox = 3D printer for 200 USD! The catch is that you have to assemble it yourself. The more well known MakerBot is a 3D printer for 2500 USD although that printer does come assembled.
I am thinking of getting one. The 200 is definitely a chewable R&D cost. Its founder Jonathan Buford is based in Hong Kong so I figured that if I failed miserably in my assembly there is at least someone close by to give me some help.
Will let you know how it goes once my order is in. I figured that if I successfully got this to work I can probably graduate from geekdom into nerddom so it would be a very worthy thing to do.

More playing with vintage glass, the Pentax A SMC 28.8 again... after doing tests of several of my manual lenses, this one is definitely a fav. I ran a bunch through the works on the X-E1 over the weekend and saw some nice results in general. Perhaps I'll cross that line of geekdom and post a few here at some point. :-)
i'm a harry potter geek
you might be asking, "how do you know you've crossed the line from avid reader into full-on geekdom?" there are clues in my day today, a day that was just chock full of harry potter:
1. i spent the majority of the day trying to finish off my re-read of harry potter and the half-blood prince, book six in the series. (i also bought it the first day it went on sale. and the one before it.)
2. went to borders early in the afternoon to get my orange wristband which secured my place closer to the front of the line tonight for the release of the final harry potter book in the series. (also picked up a free "snape is loyal" sticker; we got to choose between that and "snape is a traitor.")
3. went by work to pick up a package and ended up going to see harry potter and the order of the phoenix (movie five in the series) with some co-workers. it was my second time seeing it; first was on opening night in imax 3D.
4. stood in line for about an hour tonight to get my copy of harry potter and the deathly hallows, book seven -- the final installation -- in the series. (queue-up began around 11:30 for just-past-midnight sales.) got a free poster and "glow wand" for extra geek points.
of course, there's also the fact that i pre-ordered the book almost six months ago when i first got word of the actual release date. and the fact that i shot and posted this image now because i know that i likely won't be having any more contact with the outside world -- or any sleep either -- until i've finished reading it. (check out secret #18.) or that i was actually afraid in line that some asshole in front of me was going to get the book, flip to the end and announce to the whole store what happened.
so... there it is. and you'll see me again whenever i'm done with the book. i'm a geek. there. i said it.

It's only logical...that I do some "Iron Planking" in this context as Mr Stark is such a fan of Star Trek - the only non documentary telly his father allowed him to watch, as a kid!
I had a beaut arvo in November (2014) revisiting my geek 'origins' after excepting an invitation from Austrek, the Australian Star Trek Club, to attend a monthly meeting and give a talk about "Bad Science Fiction Films".
Fandom (ANY fandom) at its best is all about passion and I have been, and always shall be, a mad keen Star Trek fan.
Austrek, was where I discovered Science Fiction fandom, although it's equally true to say that it discovered me.
It was in the mid 1970s, though I'll have to do some digging to discover exactly when...and do rather look forward to a fondly nostalgic fossicking around in my archives.
For now though, it's enough to recall how much fun I had there, for a couple of decades or so, and how much I got from it and how much I gave back and by doing so got even more in return...
Anyway, I took along with me a quickly gathered random selection of "The Captain's Log" newsletter, which has been Austrek's periodical newsletter, under one masthead or another, since its inception. As one terrific teen at the meeting asked, "Which of these covers did you draw?"
Me: "All of them..."
And so I did. Not all of the entire run of the covers, to be sure, but at least fifty-ish, I reckon, at a guess.
Austrek was and is like that. It's fertile soil for fannish creativity. Many of the things I enjoy doing now were either kickstarted or developed further during those early years I spent with Austrek, including writing, drawing, painting, sculpting, costuming and, messing about with assorted performing arts.
Of course, Austrek is where I first met Paul Ruzek, who was the co-creator of the Science Fiction, Fantasy and Historical radio show back in 1994, and which I am still presenting and producing today.
So, yah, it was very much like coming home walking through the door of the Northcote Town Hall, and being met with a generously warm welcome by the clubmemembers.
The talk was well received, which is instructive, since I normally wouldn't go out of my way to be so negative as to single out "Bad Sci-Fi" as a category in itself...life's too short, and I'm more often than not given to a more positive outlook.
However, focusing that much negativity was a challenge, and I found myself slipping back into a certain, shall we say, Klingon mindset, that has been such a personal 'joy' to role play with, when I've been costuming as one of those worthy aliens.
Oh, the films?
Well, I'll post here a list of the ones that made the cut, including many that are 'yeahnahmaybe' movies...so bad that they're actually great fun to watch!
-ALIEN 3
-BATMAN AND ROBIN
-BIRDEMIC
-FRANKENSTEIN VS BARAGON
-HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN
-H.G WELLS' THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
-HIGHLANDER II
-HOWARD THE DUCK
-I AM OMEGA
-INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL
-MAN OF STEEL
-PLANET OF THE APES (THE BURTON ONE)
-PROMETHEUS
-SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS
-STARSHIP TROOPERS
-STAR TREK V
-STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
-STAR WARS I, II, III and VI (Cheers, ta, Mr Lucas, that I have to bloody well explain that I mean the three prequels and the last movie of the original trilogy)
-SUPERMAN IV THE QUEST FOR PEACE
-THE TIME MACHINE (The 2002 one)
-TOTAL RECALL (The 1990 one)
-TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION
-VOYAGE TO THE PLANET OF PREHISTORIC WOMEN (Which is to say, the butchered American versions of the classic Pavel Klushantsev Soviet space exploration film, PLANET BUR)
Some additional films were added on during the Q & A session: ESCAPE FROM L.A, KING KONG LIVES and, for my sins, I even gleefully wrangled over Tarkovsky's magnificent masterpieces, SOLARIS and STALKER (Ask me how!)
What evil fun!
But remember, everyone takes their own size popcorn and flavour choc-top into the cinema...
Thanks to Austrek, and to its brilliant clubmembers, including Rebecca Pinskier and Mel Nemer, who invited me along, and Snudge, who provided essential technical support for the talk.
