The area around Gare de Lyon exudes a Mediterranean atmosphere but it is still very Parisien of course. Corner Boulevard Diderot (left) and Rue de Lyon (right) with Bistrot de la Gare proudly in the middle.

It was a few years ago. We were just landing in Paris again, ready for more adventures! There was something about those cheerful, colorful, whimsical adverts disappearing into the distance! I asked Peter to pose where I could include them in the photo. Click!

About the Gare de Lyon: The Gare de Lyon (Station of Lyon), officially Paris-Gare-de-Lyon, is one of the six large mainline railway station termini in Paris, France. It handles about 148.1 million passengers every year according to the estimates of SNCF in 2018, with SNCF railways and RER D accounting for around 110 million, and 38 million on the RER A, making it the third busiest station of France and one of the busiest of Europe.

The station was built for the World Exposition of 1900. On multiple levels, it is considered a classic example of the architecture of its time. Most notable is the large clock tower atop one corner of the station, similar in style to the clock tower of the United Kingdom Houses of Parliament, home to Big Ben.

I took the train from Paris Gare de Lyon down to Marseilles today. I arrived in plenty of time at the station, to people-watch and to write up a review for the blog I write for. This guy sat down next to me in Hall 1 and was engrossed in drawing - his style was somewhat abstract and cubist in nature. It was great to see. He was so wrapped up in his art he didn't notice me taking this. I eventually arrived in Marseilles at 4pm, traipsed around a kilometre to my hotel with a 90L pack and then, after cleaning up, went off to explore.

Built for the World Exposition in 1900, the frontage of the station is one of the grandest in Paris. The scene has changed little over the past 117 years; the most notable addition is the Hotel Mercure to the right of the clock tower.
