a small garbage pile...not too out of control yet. there is no garbage collection in kathmandu but we did see men with wooded boards tied to their hands picking up the garbage and putting it in a rickshaw to be taken somewhere else

Rumbo al Sur also places their garbage cans at the AC Transit bus stop at Park Blvd and Wellington. Every Monday morning, their cans block the bus stop. Anyone using the stop has to smell their cans. It is difficult to get to the doors of the bus with the cans in the way. Rumbo al Sur management has been told about this problem many times over the last 6 months, but they do not fix the problem. In our town in US, our garbage collectors were men. They came every Tuesday, rain or shine. If there was a holiday, they had to make it up by coming later that week. But they came once a week no fail. Here in Kerala.....
We were told they will come twice a week, Monday and Thursday. We must separate the food waste from all other waste, particularly the food waste bin must be lined with newspaper. No plastic or you will get a harsh lecture. And believe me, t.hese ladies are not ladies you want to mess with! It's kind of and LOL situation, but not really- it's for real. Our neighbors who been here for a year got a lecture last week. I witnessed it. Ok I did not understand it in Malayalam but .... I knew they were 'scared' of these ladies. I was just fearing..did I not put the garbage out correctly?
Anyhow in the two weeks we been in this house, the first week they came on Monday and Thursday. I assume this was just to give us the appearance they go by some standards (outside the lectures and verbal bashings of course...) because the second week Monday, Tuesday Wednesday all came and went. With Friday being a holiday I thought they will not come on Thursday. They did. But today being Monday, no trash collectors came as scheduled. What up with that!!
The other thing to mention is in US the garbage truck can smell, but often it's not that bad (maybe it's worse in hot climates, I don't know). Here these ladies come in a rickshaw (three wheeled vehicle) made into a truck. It's pretty small... and the hot Kerala sun COOKS that garbage and believe me they leave a trail of stench behind. All garbage begins to stink here pretty fast even if it's inside the house (no central air!).....so gotta be careful about it.
(PS. They finally came on Tuesday. So they will probably say they only came a day late but they had not come the previous Thursday...so??? :) )

76th Street is supposedly a bike route. The gutter lane is frequently in bad shape under railroad viaducts, but here along 76th it's also full of garbage.

Coptic Christians in Cairo Egypt living in El Zabaleen, or garbage city. For generations families would work together to collect all the rubbish from the streets of Cairo and take it back to their homes. They then sift and sort through all the items which are then sold on to merchants. 85% of all solid waste is thus recycled from the city.
Families used to own pigs that used to eat the organic waste but everyone of them was slaughtered during 2009 during the outbreak of the H1N1 'swine' flu, even though there were no cases reported in Egypt. It was the only country that carried out a mass cull, and was also reported that it was done in an inhumane manner. This increased tension and resentment with the Government.
A truck removing one of the grey "Tectainers" from Crisps Creek Intermodal Depot, bound for the Woodlawn Bioreactor site. The conainer is full of garbage from Sydney, which is transported to the terminal by train six days a week. While the train is in the siding, there is a nonstop procession of trucks taking the containers to the dumping site.

The city gives the driver free room and board in the living capsule in the back of the vehicle provided that he completes the daily pickups. Back at the city owned lot, the truck is resupplied and connected to utilities.
