This is towards the end of Day 1, as we approached Rausch Gap Village. This is a big pile of coal. Although I went to college in Pennsylvania, I was never properly schooled in what I believe is called coaling. According to Jerry, this is a big pile of stuff that the people who coaled didn't want. It's not ever day you see a big pile of this, so we did what had to be done.
Carvers Gap straddles the North Carolina/Tennessee border. It's the starting point for what many backpackers consider the best weekend trip in the region: the Appalachian Trail between Carvers Gap and US 19E.
