This image was shot at ISO 25600. I feel that using ISO 25600 for this situation was unnecessary since it introduces grain to the image and lowers its overall detail. I also noticed that it messed with the color of the image a bit, especially around the edges of the image.
Despite my best intentions, and most careful driver work, I managed to cleanly strip the head of the last screw. It felt like it had been glued in place. I had no choice in the end but to drill through it until the halves separated. I still can't get the now slightly widened trunk of the screw out of there. There's too little left above the boss to grip with even needle nose pliers. I'm sure it could be removed with ever-larger tiny carbide bits and the like, but after I got it all cleaned up and reassembled, and played some Zelda with it, and remembered how funless this controller was, I don't think I care hard enough. The rest of the screws hold it together fine.

NES-027. All the Nintendo gear has designations like this. The original paddles are NES-004. The NES-001 was the actual front-loading NES. NES-026 from 1987 was the NES Advantage, which I'm sure will be another disassembled item here in my Flickrspace soon enough (got that RetroPad for Christmas, too).
There are no traces on the back of the PCB for the NES MAX. Everything's up here. More pics of this, and a high-res scan later in this "Nintendo 1988 NES MAX RetroPad disassembly" set.

The thumb-slider on my old MAX back in the late 80s always slid around with seemingly no friction. I was an only child, and a bit of a neat freak about my toys, so everything stayed clean and shiny. This paddle has seen much less (or would it be more?) love, and the slider felt like it had a patch of sandpaper behind it. I open up everything to see how it works, but this definitely needed to be gutted and cleaned out.

I cant even fathom how the controller got this filthy. There's hair in here coiled around in the red slider's underbelly, with grit and grease coating all of it, and in some cases forming a solid chunk of gunk. I felt kind of queasy looking around in there. No wonder it was sliding like it had sandpaper in there.

This is a high-res scan of the cleaned mating surfaces of the thumb slider. It's pretty badly scratch up from all the grit that was in there. When put back together, it was much better than it had been, but still nowhere near the glasslike action of a new MAX. To solve this somewhat, I put a dab of extra virgin olive oil in there as a lubricant. It worked great. It's still not like new, but it slips around in a satisfying way. If I cared, I could probably find thin Teflon labels and apply one to each half, but I don't.
