As described in the Wikipedia: "The iQue Player (pronounced "IQ") is a video game console that was manufactured by iQue, a joint venture between Nintendo and Chinese-American scientist Dr. Wei Yen. The iQue Player is based on the Nintendo 64, but uses system-on-a-chip technology to reduce size. It plays Nintendo 64 games specifically ported to the system. Games for this console are stored on a 64MB flash card which is contained within a cartridge that plugs directly into controller/console. Games are purchased at a special "iQue depot" where games may be downloaded onto the cartridge and played later."
RetroZone is a company that fills a nice little niche market for actual old-school video game controllers modified with USB-enabled Microchip PIC microcontrollers, allowing them to be used as standard plug-and-play game pads on modern computers. This also means they work with emulators, so for example, I played a little bit of the original mid-80s "The Legend of Zelda" on my computer with this pad once it was cleaned, and then remembered why I didn't use my own NES MAX much back in the mid-80s :)
The LC4969 chip there is a 3-input inverting-function buffer gate. The chip in the lower right, an M4021BP is a parallel-in/serial-out 8-bit shift register. The NES used an 8-bit parallel-in/serial-out chip, too. There are 8 buttons on NES paddles, so it's perfect. The parallel ins can read in all 8 button states simultaneously, then deliver the info through the serial out via a single wire.
