This is the lighthouse at Galley Head, a rocky peninsula between Clonakilty and Rosscarbery in West Cork. A superb , wild spot; as I took this image there were a couple of Choughs feeding happily at the bottom of the field shown in the foreground.

The Galley Head is a headland and lighthouse outside of Rosscarbery, County Cork, on the south coast of Ireland. Galley Head Lighthouse station is situated on the Galley Head or Dundeady headland in the very heart of West Cork at about 130 feet above sea level, overlooking St George's Channel and 2 magnificent beaches, Red strand to the East and the Long Strand to the West . The headland is cut off from the mainland by the ancient walls of the old Norman stronghold of Dun Deidi, an important fortress of the local O’Cowhig Clan.

The station was built in 1875, during the heyday of lighthouse building, and within twenty years of its closest neighbors at Old Head of Kinsale and Fastnet. The Galley Head and the Fastnet have the distinction of being two of the most powerful lighthouses in Europe.

I love the old walls and the stone steps to the sea. I love West Cork I came out this way with my father a lot when I was a child. :-)

The galley on board the 400-meter container ship MAYVIEW MAERSK. I don't know how the ship's chefs manage to prepare so many meals and keep the galley always clean while they are working.

No I'm not starting a train Tuesday - but this is the galley from the inside of a train from probably back in the 1940-60's.

I had toured some old trains and this caught my eye for the light, metallic tones and angles. ....It's a lot of metal!!

My ISO was set at 400 but still fought a little with noise.

While traveling through Ireland, we had a few spots marked to try to shoot if we had the time, the light, and the weather. I'm not sure we had the weather for this shot, since it was grey, spitting rain, and very blustery. But I think it turned out OK anyway. ;-)

Galley Head Lighthouse rises an imposing 53m above the roaring Atlantic ocean in the popular tourist haven of West Cork.

Galley Head is a gleaming white lighthouse that sits at the southernmost point of a picturesque headland known as Dundeady Island and is close to the charming market town of Clonakilty – home of the famous black pudding!

Galley Head Lighthouse was built in 1875, during the heyday of lighthouse building.

When Galley Head was first constructed, it was the most powerful lighthouse light in the world.

The lighthouse’s lantern, dome and 21-metre tower are still painted white, just as they were in the 19th century.

The lighthouse was converted to electric operation in 1969 and automated in 1979.

The Australian-built replica of James Cook's HMB Endeavour is one of the world's most accurate maritime replica vessels.

When you come on board you may wonder whether James Cook and his crew have just stepped ashore somewhere on their voyage. The table is set, clothes are hung and the cat is slumbering.

On board the beautifully crafted ship, you glimpse a sailor's life during one of history's great maritime adventures, Captain Cook's epic 1768-71 world voyage. Look and you'll see almost 30 kilometres of rigging and 750 wooden blocks or pulleys! The masts and spars carry 28 sails that spread approximately 10,000 sq feet (930 m2) of canvas.

In the galley below is the huge stove, called a firehearth - state of the art in 1768. The Great Cabin is where Cook worked and dined, sharing the space with famous botanist Joseph Banks, as you can see when you glance around.

Construction of the Endeavour replica began in 1988 and the ship was launched 5 years later.

This was the kitchen at the apartment we rented in Pacific Heights. It was small and narrow but very modern and cozy. I especially liked the frosted glass cupboards and the fridge built into the wall was really neat....

In the history of naval warfare, Lepanto marks the last major engagement in the Western world to be fought entirely or almost entirely between rowing vessels, the galleys and galeasses that were still the direct descendants of the ancient trireme warships. The battle was in essence an "infantry battle on floating platforms".[12] It was the largest naval battle in Western history since classical antiquity, involving more than 400 warships. Over the following decades, the increasing importance of the galleon and the line of battle tactic would displace the galley as the major warship of its era, marking the beginning of the "Age of Sail". Fast, powerful, maneuverable, and versatile, War Galleys dominated naval warfare in the Mediterranean from the 8th century BC until the development of advanced sailing warships in the 17th century.

There was nice afternoon light on the tree and landscape but on this occasion I thought the contrast worked as black and white

I hate this MOC. It is a perfect example of what happens if I lose interest in a creation before finishing it. You can see a lot more joy and effort in the first one I made.

Anyways, Brickself.
