NO 6946 9572, LR38 & LR45.

 

Second Geodetic Levelling, Scotland (1936-52).

Flush bracket G912 was used during the second geodetic levelling of Scotland, and was levelled with a height of 206.9990 feet [63.0933 metres] above mean sea level (Newlyn datum). It was included on the Aberdeen to Banchory levelling line. Geodetic line G.200, levelled during 1944. The surveyor's description was W face, SW angle of Burnett Arms Hotel, Mount Street, Banchory.

 

This levelling line was not surveyed as part of 3GL Scotland.

 

This marker was last verified in 1974. The OS Online Archive gives the description: Burnett Arms Hotel.

 

SITE VISIT

On west gable of building by side street. Hotel on north side of A93. Public access. FB heavily caked in black paint.

This marker was relevelled as a tertiary bench mark and last verified in 1968. The OS Online Archive gives the description "bridge parapet, NE side of road, NW side of stream".

Bridge parapet. West end of of north parapet, FB facing SW across road. Numbers were buried, had to be dug out.

BM 115.02m. House, 150m up track, east side of B974. Courtesy ring at house first. Owners friendly and showed us the FB which is now partly hidden by foliage but is in good condition.

The flush bracket is mounted on the RHS parapet of a bridge carrying the communal drive into houses. Open access to marker location. The bracket is in good condition.

SITE VISIT

Had to flatten brambly undergrowth in front of parapet. The flush bracket has gone. The mortar in the parapet is crumbling and the bracket must have been loose or fallen to the ground. There was no sign of it lying in immediate proximity. The bracket is presumably now an ornament or scrapped.

HISTORY

Pillar completed 18th September 1949 costing £14.3s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NO89/T22, and levelled to second class precision during 1950. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in August 1973.

 

SITE VISIT

Overall approach from NNE. Parked in makeshift layby to north side of unclassified road, 100m west of track at NO617989. Up mapped track to highpont then via steep unmapped track and easy woodland grass to summit. Ord More. Woodland setting with overhead tree coverage. Pillar in good condition with tree one foot in front of flush bracket. Spider retains OS centre cap with shallow engraved letters. Flush bracket faces SSW, compass measurement 193°. Vented through right (SE) sight hole. The view was lost to the surrounding woods many years ago.
