Designed by Tony Hatter, the second generation Cayman was unveiled along with its sibling, third generation Boxster, at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, going on Spring of 2013, six months after the Boxster, as a 2014 model year car.
The 981 generation Cayman was announced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, designed by Hugh Robinson the third generation Boxster (2nd generation Cayman) available with either the standard Cayman with a 2.7 L engine, and as Cayman S with a 3.4 L engine. Both versions are available with either a 6-speed manual or a dual-clutch 7-speed PDK transmission.
The 981 features upgrades including a new body, a longer wheelbase, a wider front track, and a redesigned interior that matches the firm's contemporary 911 models. It is also 30kg lighter than the outgoing generation The 981 was the first Boxster/Cayman to use electronically assisted steering, and the parking brake in the car uses an electronic linkage.
