The first generation of the Toyota Mirai was built from 2017 until 2021. It was the first hydrogen fuel-cell car sold commercially. Until now only Hyundai and Toyota are selling hydrogen cars, both in relatively small numbers. This is one of the few Mirais I've seen on the street.
London's first three Hydrogen fuel cell buses were Mercedes Citaro's. This one is seen on route No.25 at Stratford station. Alongside it is a diesel fuelled Dennis Trident double decker on route No. 86.
The Toyota Mirai, introduced in 2017 was the first hydrogen fuel-cell car sold commercially. The car itself emits only water. However hydrogen has to be produced and distributed for these cars. Germany is one of the countries where the Mirai is available.
While Yutong is best known in the western world for its battery-electric buses it also produced hydrogen fuel cell examples, albeit in much lesser numbers. A trial fleet of those are in use in its home city of Zhengzhou, including offside doors to suit a bus rapid transit section. Here one of those is seen.
The Honda Clarity is a hydrogen fuel-cell car. It is now leased to customers in California. The car emits only water. However hydrogen has to be produced and distributed for this kind of cars.

AC Transit in the East Bay area of California has a long-ish associatiion with hydrogen fuel cell-electric buses and it currently runs quite a number of them. They are from Van Hool and, as seen here, New Flyer. Fleet number 7206 is an XHE60 model, one of 10 with AC Transit; the operator also has five similar XE40 battery-electric models. The bus is seen here in Berkeley on a 51B journey on a Saturday afternoon.

The Toyota Mirai , Japanese for "future") is a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle manufactured by Toyota, one of the first such vehicles to be sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of December 2017, global sales totaled 5,300 Mirais. The top selling markets were the U.S. with 2,900 units, Japan with 2,100 and Europe with 200.
Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km (312 mi) on a full tank, with a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 66 mpg‑US (3.6 L/100 km; 79 mpg‑imp) equivalent (MPG-equivalent), making the Mirai the most fuel efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated by the EPA, and the one with the largest range.

For now, the only model of hydrogen-fuelled double-decker bus to carry passengers in the UK is the Wrightbus StreetDeck Hydroliner, although that will change soon when Alexander Dennis enters the fray with its Enviro400FCEV. The Wrightbus product can be found in London, the West Midlands, Belfast and - as seen here - Aberdeen, a city that saw its first hydrogen buses some years ago in a batch of now withdrawn Van Hool A330 models.
While the StreetDeck Hydroliner is no doubt at the vanguard of bus technology, the 25 in Aberdeen have encountered mixed fortunes; an earlier batch required rectification work that, despite them being new only in 2020, has kept some off the road for over a year. Those from the second batch, delivered in 2022, seem to be more successful. Here is 39718 (SV22 VXE) on Broad Street in the Granite City. It is operating the route that it's branded for, which a couple of hours of observations suggest is far from universal practice for First Aberdeen. Its zero-emission fleet will grow further this year with the delivery of a batch of Yutong E12 battery-electric single-deckers.

There's always interesting stuff hanging around the BNSF Topeka shops, and this trip was no exception. The yard just east of the shops is a mix of engines that are in the middle of rebuilds, wreck repairs, long-term storage, and paperweighting. The three right up front here, the 1205, snow plow and TFM 1623 all qualify as the latter.
The Hyundai ix35 FCEV was one of the first fuel cell hydrogen cars on the market. Between 2013 and 2018 some 250 were made available in Europe for testing in daily use. At that moment there were almost no hydrogen filling stations in Europe, so the usability of this model was limited.

Today marked the debut for the brand new hydrogen double deckers on the 7, the first in London and the first for a Central route since Wrightbus was bought out by Bamford. It's refreshing to see hydrogen power back in the frame after countless deliveries of electric buses.
This is the first time I got to ride a hydrogen unit since the RV1 was withdrawn nearly two years ago. Of course, this is packed with all the latest tech; digital blinds, mirrorless cameras and charging points for every seat.
After numerous delays due to Perivale East (PV) needing the infrastructure installed, the hybrids can start transferring to Cricklewood to work the 328 as well as a bunch of other routes there.
First impressions are pretty decent; the ride was smooth and refined. Noise is different to the RV1 units; more like an electric motor than high-pitched whirring but the Gemini 3's problems remain the same. Overly thick A-pillars and ugly styling. This unit's hydrogen pumps take up all the space where a rear window on the lower deck should be. Lasted a full day of service which is positive. Once they're all delivered, I reckon Wrightbus should focus on a Gemini 4 or a brand new generation of buses.
Interesting to see how they perform over the next year and whether hydrogen has a place for a few other routes.

Seen here is First Aberdeens Vanhool A330 6X2 Hydrogen Fuelcell 64994 (SV14 FZR) passing through Shielhill with Dubford, Shielhill terminus in the background on a Limited Stop X40 to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
64997 was new in March 2014 and stayed in storage for just under a year while the Hydrogen Refuelling plant was built. She is part of a batch of 10 owned by Aberdeen City Council with 6 being operated by Stagecoach (29901 - 29906) on their X17 and 4 by First on the X40 (64994 - 64997). These entered service on the 15th of March 2015. After some initial Teething problems they're now running more reliable although still not as good as expected. Overall these are pretty nice buses with a real solid quality feel to them. Something very rare these days.
The 40 was extended to Dubford in September 2012 and renumbered X40 in November 2013, the reason for the renumbering was to make it more clear that the route is limited stop. In April 2017 the frequency was increased to Every 15/20 minutes.
As of August 2017 Dubford is served by the 8,9,X40 and Night Service N1. Most 8/9s become an X40 at Dubford and vise-versa.
The trial period for the Vanhools ends in December 2018. It will be interesting to see what happens then. As it's also when the lease to First and Stagecoach expires. Whether or not the Council leases them to First and Stagecoach after this date is still undecided.
