on sunday, april 29th, at 3:42am, a tanker truck carrying 8600 gallons of gasoline crashed and exploded, causing the collapse of the 580 freeway overpass onto I-880. the accident occurred in oakland bordering emeryville near the entrance of the bay bridge toll plaza.
the truck driver, mr mosqueda, was heading towards a gas station near the oakland airport when he lost control of his truck, colliding with the guard-rail and eventually flipping his truck. the explosion sent flames several hundred feet into the air. the heat from the flames quickly caused the melted steel girders and bolts that supported the concrete highway to collapse. the section of the 580 freeway came crashing down 30 feet onto interstate 880 below. on an average day both sections of the freeway are used by 160,000 vehicles.
damaged is estimated in the tens of millions and will take months to repair. fortunately, the driver of the truck survived with second degree burns. he hailed down a taxi cab and he was treated at a nearby hospital.
the accident occurred only a mile away from where i live. i heard helicopters, sirens and construction vehicles all morning long but i had no clue what had happened until i read the news. when i drove to the scene of the accident it was surreal to see the melted down section of the freeway. the concrete looked like a painting by dali.

This was an odd one.
Approaching the end of the M5 just south of Exeter, we became aware of huge clouds of white smoke billowing all over the road.
Was it an accident? Was it a fire off the road?
Well, apart from seeing a Highways Agency patrol racing off in the distance, we never actually found out. Presumably it was a car with an exhaust problem of fairly major dimensions.
In places it was as thick as fog, yet cars happily raced past us at over 70mph into the complete unknown, unaware - it would seem - of the risks they were taking.
At the off-ramp for SR 193 North (SR 193 begins here and ends in Ashtabula). Access US 422 and Youngstown's North Side via SR 193 North. Connecticut & Bella Vista Avenues are next up.
I've posted maps of this before, but this set has the exits, not just the general route. Alternative A would have run just north of Ashby for most of the length.

Brandon, FL- I-75 N Bound collector distributor roadway where the ramp to FL 60 steals two of its lanes as this interchange sees lots of traffic. The state route heads west into Tampa as Adamo Drive seeing industrial areas, while Brandon Blvd. takes the state highway east into Brandon where lots of retail, and restaurants are developed.
