This shows a semi-underground freeway extending the Embarcadero Freeway and going up Northpoint St. Columbus Avenue terminates at Northpoint in a plaza and park

In this version, the western approach to the Southern Crossing is at Sierra Point. At the bottom, Interstate 380 connects to the Bayfront Freeway.

This shopping complex has morphed throughout the years. Originally it was a giant Sears Department Store, known as Sears El Monte. I remember it as a kid, as it used to have a great toy department in the basement with fantastic model train displays during Christmas time. But all things must change. This store was originally connected to a shopping center. I don't remember going into any other area but the Sears. In the late 1970s, Sears closed down this store.

The outcome of the rest of the stores are unknown, but they are gone.

Home Club Hardware Stores took over the Sears building. Home Club changed its name to Home Base. They competed directly with Home Depot. For years they operated, until one day, they decided to close down the chain. They did attempt to start another chain, with some of the stores, Home 2 Life??, however this store was not part of them, nor did the Home 2 Life Chain last a long time.

Anyway. On the parameter of the parking lot, the built a car dealership: Longo Toyota and their upper scale line: Longo Lexus. The dealership was to the right of Home Base. To the left was several new stores built on the parking lot. The stores included Tianguis Supermarket, Thrifty Drug Store and several smaller shops. Over the years, stores have come and gone.

After Home Base closed, Longo Lexus took over the building to use for their auto dealership. Remnants of the former Sears Building still can be seen in the photos.

Tianguis Supermarket, which was owned by VONS, closed down after several years after it was discovered by VONS that they could not compete with other speciality chains. The building sat vacant for many years, until KMART took over the site. They turned the interior into a typical KMART.

Now the Ironic twist of fate. A few years ago, KMART Corp. took over SEARS Holdings, and became SEARS Holdings. This former KMART converted into SEARS Essentials Department Store. SEARS has come full circle in this shopping center.

Intersection of McMahons Road and Cranbourne Road, at the end of Franskston Freeway. Large volumes of traffic passed through this intersection from the end of the freeway , causing delays back up the freeway. This situation was made worse with the opening of Eastlink in 2008, with queues extending back to Frankston Dandenong Road or even Seaford Road in the evening peak or for holiday traffic. By then there was pressure to complete the Frankston bypass section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to join the existing sections at Seaford and Mount Martha.

As a temporary measure right turn traffic from south-to-east, against the end of the freeway, was banned in 2009. Traffic wishing to turn right from McMahons Road to Cranbourne Road had to turn left then perform a U-turn at a dedicated set of signals - referred to as the Frankston P-Turn. The freeway bypass has since opened as the Peninsula Link project in January 2013 but the P-turn arrangement remains, subject to review. It was understood that the right turn would be reinstated with opening of the bypass.

This shot is of McMahons Road looking north at the abandoned right turn lanes, blocked off by temporary spike down kerb and the pedestrian crossing kerb extended across. The joint use street light/traffic signal pole has also been moved into the former right turn lane.In the distance is the Beach Street overpass at the end of the Frankston Freeway. Much of the traffic has been removed from this intersection since the opening of Peninsula Link.

Leaving Chicagland, as the locals referred to it, was a relatively simple undertaking in daylight, but in the dark hours it got a little challenging, especially if you wanted to avoid tolls on freeways. The first part of the trip was, south on I-94, was going smoothly, even if the scenery was drab or nonexistent where the roadway was in a sort of concrete-walled ditch. If our cash resreves had been more substantial, the logical way to go would have been to take the Chicago Skyway, which was the shortest, quickest route to Michigan City, but we were still thinking about stopping to eat and possibly needed another fuel stop, thus were loathe to toss our meager funds into little metal baskets at toll booths every few miles. So we passed on the Skyway exit and kept heading south, planning to take US- 12, the old road east, starting in Gary, Indiana, home to U.S. Steel and the largest steel plant in the universe. Gary was a blue collar, hard-edge town where racial tension was always just below the surface. "I don't remember there being any riots here," said Ashley when i mentioned this. "Makes sense," i said, "wer'e used to

thinking of the 1968 riots in Detroit, but the Chicago South Side/ Gary Race Riot was in 1919. "Glad I missed it," said Ashley. "Me too. The story behind it was that many working class jobs were filled by Eurpean immigrants, especially the Irish. During World War One. when many local men left their jobs for military service in Europe, poor black people from the South went north to fill those jobs. After the working class white laborers returned they blamed both the steelworks and the black community and rioted, burning the homes of black families and attacking innocent members of that community. In all, about a thousand families were left homeless and 40 people died." "That's quite a story," Ash remarked, "let's skip Gary."

Driving on the Outer Loop of Interstate 495, also known as the Washington, DC Beltway, in Fairfax County, Virginia, USA. Interstate 495 is a massive, at least 8 lane (4 lanes each way), freeway that forms a loop around the U.S. National Capital City of Washington, DC, with sections in the U.S. states of Maryland, and Virginia (pictured here). It is notorious for its extremely high volumes of traffic, as is well illustrated by this picture. Fairfax County, Virginia is the most populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia, as well as in the entire Washington, DC-Baltimore metropolitan area, with about 1.1 million people, and is growing relatively fast in population. This photo was taken on Thursday, December 6, 2012, on the way to the Washington DC Dulles International Airport to pick up my grandmother from from her month-long thanksgiving vacation in her native Puerto Rico.

"sunny" spring freeway traffic

Somewhat amusing road name. This is along VA 28 northbound at SR 608 (Frying Pan Road) in Chantilly, VA, right in the shadows of the Dulles Airport. The interchange of VA 28 and SR 608 actually used to be at-grade with traffic signals, but in a recent act by VDOT to make VA 28 between I-66 in Centreville and VA 7 in Sterling a full blown freeway, the at-grade intersection was eliminated and a trumpet interchange took its place.

on sunday, april 29th, at 3:42am, a tanker truck carrying 8600 gallons of gasoline crashed and exploded, causing the collapse of the 580 freeway overpass onto I-880. the accident occurred in oakland bordering emeryville near the entrance of the bay bridge toll plaza.

the truck driver, mr mosqueda, was heading towards a gas station near the oakland airport when he lost control of his truck, colliding with the guard-rail and eventually flipping his truck. the explosion sent flames several hundred feet into the air. the heat from the flames quickly caused the melted steel girders and bolts that supported the concrete highway to collapse. the section of the 580 freeway came crashing down 30 feet onto interstate 880 below. on an average day both sections of the freeway are used by 160,000 vehicles.

damaged is estimated in the tens of millions and will take months to repair. fortunately, the driver of the truck survived with second degree burns. he hailed down a taxi cab and he was treated at a nearby hospital.

the accident occurred only a mile away from where i live. i heard helicopters, sirens and construction vehicles all morning long but i had no clue what had happened until i read the news. when i drove to the scene of the accident it was surreal to see the melted down section of the freeway. the concrete looked like a painting by dali.

San Diego wandering

Arguably the best place to take a picture of downtown Los Angeles - day or night. You may have to wait for the TV news vans to finish up and move out of the way - they know the good locations to shoot from too.
