The end scene of the story told at the Zuiderzeelicht. The sea foal of Volendam.

We don't know any better than those Volendam people are great fishermen. But long ago, Volendam was no more than a hamlet with a few poor farmers.

Curious Lijsje

A number of farmers' daughters were once making hay when a beautiful foal suddenly emerged from the water of the Zuiderzee. All the girls ran away screaming, except one. That was Lijsje, the daughter of farmer Krelis. Lijsje was a curious child and approached the foal. The horse lay down and let the girl pet it. They played a bit and Lijsje gave the foal something tasty to eat. As a thank you, the animal gave Lijsje a whopper of a bone. A beautiful fish and a true delicacy!

Rich sea

After the seahorse disappeared back into the water, Lijsje could not get the event out of her mind. A few days later the animal appeared again. This time Lijsje received a beautiful haddock as a gift. More encounters followed and each time the foal brought back a sea treasure for the girl. Herring, plaice, smelt, you name it! As if the horse wanted to make it clear how richly filled the sea was.

Engulfed

On an autumn day, Lijsje was walking along the water. Her beloved animal had not been seen in a while and she missed it terribly. She wandered around full of restlessness and longing. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the beautiful sea foal appeared!

What happened then? We do not know whether the foal took Lijsje with her or whether she voluntarily stepped on his back, but what is certain is that they walked into the sea and were swallowed up by the water.

Quest

The Volendammer men wanted their Lijs back and made nets with which they searched the entire sea. They did that every day, year in, year out. The girl has not yet been found, but the men always returned with nets full of oily fish.

And so it was that Volendam turned from a poor farming village into a rich fishing village.

Earlier in this Hyde Park series, I posted photos of the Brownlee House, an example of the American Foursquare. The Faulk-Frenke House is also an example of the Foursquare style of architecture. Houses in this classical style are built in a cube design with a veranda spanning the front and a pyramidal-shaped roof.

Built in 1917 by a cousin of John Henry Faulk, a well-known and controversial Austin commentator, the house went through a succession of owners until 1971 when Merle and Ginna Franke purchased it. At that time, it was in considerable need of repairs, and the use of space was not suited to modern-day living.

Franke's son, Steve, led a renovation during the 1980s and '90s. All the changes were made within the original framework and are sympathetic to the house's character. There are no additions—Steve simply reassigned space to different uses, sometimes realigning interior walls.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, the Hyde Park Historic District includes an eclectic mixture of architectural styles, from late 19th-century Queen Anne and Classical Revival homes to 20th-century bungalows and ranch houses. Additionally, many of the houses and buildings in Hyde Park have been designated City of Austin Historic Landmarks and Texas Historic Landmarks.

narożnik ul. Wilsona) – Dom Adolfa Frankego, pochodzącego z Wielkopolski ewangelika, właściciela przędzalni i fabryki włókienniczej. Wybudowany w latach 1901–1903.

The Franke Block at 91 Peel Street

Theodore Frank erected this Italianate building in 1912. It served as a grocery store and operated for fifteen years.

Originally a laneway, the building was converted into a restaurant in 1927. In 1950, the building was refitted for an insurance office.
