The DPSIR framework (Driving Forces-Pressures-State-Impacts-Responses) is used to assess and manage environmental problems. Driving forces are the socio-economic and socio-cultural forces driving human activities, which increase or mitigate pressures on the environment. Pressures are the stresses that human activities place on the environment. State, or state of the environment, is the condition of the environment. Impacts are the effects of environmental degradation. Responses refers to the responses by society to the environmental situation. This graphic explains the DPSIR process.

Sheki, Azerbaijan: Today, the opening ceremony of the second unit for Sheki hydropower station has been held. The installation of the unit was performed in the framework of the joint project on “Promoting Development of Sustainable Energy in Azerbaijan” between the State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy (SAARES) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Azerbaijan. The project was funded by the European Union (EU) and the Government of Norway.
Mr. Akim Badalov, Chairman of SAARES, Ms. Malena Mard, Head of EU Mission, Mr. Antonius Broek, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Azerbaijan and Mr. Marko Soldic, First Secretary of the Norwegian Embassy attended the inauguration as partners of the project. Welcoming the participants of the event, Mr. Badalov thanked project’s partners for their contribution and emphasized the desire of the Government of Azerbaijan and SAARES to develop alternative sources of energy countrywide. In his welcoming speech, Mr. Broek expressed his satisfaction about the successful launch of the unit and mentioned the importance of the project as a good practice of multi-stakeholders participation.
The participants were informed that Chinese company “Hunan Allonward” provided the equipment for the station and granted necessary short-and long-term guarantees for their functioning. Under the project, trainings for the local personnel of the station were conducted by the specialists of the company. Local authorities provided necessary condition and assistance for the successful implementation of the project. It was also noted that the installed capacity of the unit equals to 580 kW.
Despite rich mineral resources of the country, the Government of Azerbaijan demonstrates its commitment to the global call for action to reduce a pressure on the environment and promote the development of alternative sources of energy. “Promoting Development of Sustainable Energy in Azerbaijan” project is focused on cultivating a number of alternative energy sources, including the development of the enormous energy potential from wind power along the Caspian coastline, the increased production of biogas from poultry and livestock industries, and the ongoing development of solar. Along with improving of Sheki’s energy supply, the aim here is to evaluate the economics of installing a smaller, more environmentally friendly electric energy producing unit, and on that basis, to assess the replicability potential of the project in other small rivers and streams in Azerbaijan. This pilot hydro-power unit will be a good experience for SAARES, when building similar stations throughout the country.
Stakeholder and special interest groups have the opportunity to engage in regional and thematic consultations on Sunday 19 May and Monday 20 May to prepare their inputs to the Global Platform. Special focus lies on a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.

On the occasion, attendants committed to actions to fight the impacts of climate change and exchanged experiences of their work in this area.

I began taking a class at The Public School this past Sunday.
