a fragment of a previous photo, fragment of summer, fragment of childhood, fragment of a day, filled with sun..., bare feet on warm soil, head goes round from warm fragrances of summer, long summer evenings...
This has become a memory fragment, something for the mind to get back to during long winter season
I was attending my college roommate's wedding at a winery when it started raining. It was hardly a surprise as the clouds had been looming all weekend, so umbrellas were popping up like mushrooms, but as soon as the ceremony was over, they began hustling everyone in under shelter.
I had been near some tall, tree-like shrubbery and was just about to duck beneath a branch when I noticed the leaves ... back-lit by the afternoon cloud-diffused light, raindrops highlighted upon their surfaces, they looked like all-green kaleidoscopes. Under their shelter, it was nevertheless bright enough that I imagined that I could see every single cell within them highlighted, each tiny lens of rain silhouetted by its own shadow.
Even beyond the obvious "fragment" of leaf framed in the photo, or even the fractal nature of the leaf's structure, the fact that I had taken the shot using my iPhone 3GS's camera, in my mind, emphasizes the sometimes fragmentary nature of how we perceive the world. This was a true snapshot, in memory as well as action - the leaf noticed, a tool of convenience (rather than specialty) withdrawn, and the image captured; all the in the space of a few seconds. Then, immediately after, my friend told me to hurry up and I rejoined the festivities, forgetting about the photo entirely until I was downloading files from my phone and stumbled across it again.
