KCS FP9A No. 34 basks in the afternoon sun on Track 28 outside of Kansas City's Union Station. This F unit was originally built for the Canadian National Railway, and then later on it became a part of VIA's roster. Kansas City Southern later acquired it and it became KCS No. 4 to be used along with the other FP9s on their business train. Eventually it was retired, renumbered to 34, repainted into the classic Southern Belle paint scheme, and then donated to the Kansas City Union Station Rail Experience. 9/10/17.
No you aren't seeing things, an FP9A is leading an SD40-2 and 40 cars into the siding at Dewinton.

One of CP's FP9A pride of the fleet dressed in one of my favorite paint scheme races across the San Luis Potosi desert in probably it's most important assignment ever.
Is it too late for CPKC to fully adopt this paint scheme instead of that thing they have?

I left Winnipeg on May 22, 2000 in spring time and arrived the other morning at Churchill in freezing fog...
While the train was backing into the station track I quickly packed my belongings into the Backpack, grabbed the oversized camera bag (a Lowe Magnum Pro) and left my sleeping compartment to detrain among the first.
In hindsight I should have taken much more photos but I had captured the loading/unloading activity at Thompson already. Medium format film wasn't quite the bargain, roughly one buck a frame.
But in any event, riding stainless steel varnish hauled by streamliners was off my bucket list. In a sleeper, that is.
The necessary facts:
VIA Rail train 693 from Winnipeg has arrived in Churchill on the dreary morning of May 23, 2000. 6311 got assistance by 6304 from Thompson to the Hudson Bay.
It is the first time I processed this slide which ran through the Nikon a whopping eleven years ago.
Even though WC had a general order that the AC FP9's were not to lead in freight service west of Sault Ste. Marie I had an open offer to any crew that lead with an F that I'd buy a 12 pack of there preferred beverage. In this case I kind of felt shortchanged because there was no option, but a deal is a deal and I made my way to the store. Besides they had pulled up to the depot and were awaiting SOGBA which put the F's in the shadow of the building and were kind enough to back up about 10 car lengths to get the units out of the shadows. After I drove to the rear of the train to protect there back up move I was able to nail 1755 and 1753 on GBSOA on March 10, 1998 as the sun played hide and seek with the clouds at Trout Lake.
About 3 weeks after the previous shot of 6652 leading an ore train by the Ore Dock in Escanaba I bagged this view of the Tilden empties train SOESA arriving at Escanaba with AC 1755 leading 6626. This train ran west from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont to Larch on the old SOO and then took the connection onto the old CNW for the trip to the Ore Yard. Here the power will be swapped and a pair of 6 axles with take the empties to Eagle Mills and return to Partridge and pick up the loads and bring them to Escanaba. By that time this crew should be rested and these units will depart for Sault Ste. Marie with the loads. While FP9's were common on these trains seeing them in the lead wasn't. I'd followed this guy all the way from Trout Lake trying to get him in the sun and only managed to at Larch and here as he pulled into the yard. May 17, 1997

The former KCS mainline is still lined with many concrete mileposts, which depict the distance from the railroad's origin: Kansas City. Here, "The Empress" sprints past milepost 617 in Noble, LA as CPKC's Final Spike Tour rolls south towards its next stop of Kendleton, TX.

The former SP searchlights protecting Chaney Junction in Houston are pretty old, but they can't hold a candle to this elderly teakettle. At almost 100 years old, the only thing in this central Houston photo that predates the steam engine are the fact that railroad tracks were first laid here in 1856 by the Galveston & Red River Railway (soon Houston & Texas Central, eventually part of the Southern Pacific system).
And, as has happened for many items over the years, CP 2816 will outlast these searchlights too. The orange cables in the foreground are for signal replacements that would be erected in the weeks following the Final Spike Tour's trip through Houston.

After waiting a couple hours for some eastbounds in Murray siding, the CP business train with the F units heads west, nearing the end of the Paynesville Sub. Thankfully, this chase was not a repeat of Wednesday, and plenty of shots were had.
CP's business train is eastbound through Beaconsfield, on its way to Albany. An inspection run from Albany to Montreal will take place using this train on Monday. Power here is CP 1401, CP 4106 & CP 4107 on this 70-axle long train.
KCS1 (FP9A) followed by KCS3 (F9B) & KCS2 (FP9A) and their perfectly matching southern belle 12 car business train cross over from 2 to 3 main just west of B12 eastbound to A-5 on their trip from Kansas City into Chicago.
Nothing more to say than this was beautiful, reguardless of the wet and cloudy weather. Climbed up a fence to get a little bit of a different angle. Nice to see Ian, Jon and Jon there too. Thanks to Ian for updates throughout the day.
CPKC trains operate on trackage rights across the UP for more than 100 miles from Beaumont to Rosenberg, TX. The trackage rights were given to KCS as a condition of the UP-SP merger in 1996, and they've become integral to CPKC's route to Mexico. Supposedly, these trackage rights were also a huge sticking point to running CP 2816 to Mexico for the Final Spike Tour, as UP wasn't very amenable to another railroad's steam engine on their rails.
But they made it happen! Here, CP 2816 races through lineside trees as it passes the east switch of Devers siding between Beaumont and Houston. The former SP heritage of the Sunset Route here is clearly evident in the remaining Type G 'bowling ball' signals.

I didn't get out for the final run of the Pan Am OCS in Maine behind the Fs before CSXT took over on June 1. So oddly enough I guess this was my final shot of a Pan Am F unit...albeit being towed around and on the former Boston and Albany of all places!
After being on display for about four hours in the Keolis/MBTA Worcester layover yard for the New England Railroad Club's annual Railtech Conference: www.nerailroadclub.com/about-us/ it is time to head back to Boston. To the delight of fans PAR1 was placed on the rear behind MBTA 1074 and 3248 with her headlight on dim as a marker for the return trip east over the MBTA/Keolis Worcester mainline. She is seen here in a going away view on Main 1 at about MP 24.2 just after passing the old Richardsonian style station just out of sight to the right

The last time I saw an F-unit in my old hometown of Provo was on April 14, 1983, when the Rio Grande Zephyr passed through town for the last time. I got to see an F-unit today, this time an FP9ARM, parked in the Utah Railway yard. It was built an FP9A for the Canadian National by GMD in April 1957. By Dec. 1983, it was remanufactured into an 1800 HP FP9ARM for VIA Rail in CN's Pointe St-Charles shops in Montreal. On Feb. 4, 1986, it was wrecked in a deadly collision working the 'Super Continental' passenger train in Hinton, Alberta. VIA 6300 survived the wreck with the addition of a rebuilt cab from a KCS F7. RPCX 6300 is scheduled to be trucked from Provo to its new home working for the Heber Valley Railroad.
Volunteers work on the track at Exporail as freshly restored VIA 6309 at right glistens in the sun a year ago. Since then VIA 6309 has been moved into Exporail's main building.
The crew on OSR's St Thomas Job have backed their two FP9A's down the newly added siding and onto a cut of tank cars. They'll grab five cars from the west end, and then blast off for St Thomas.
Its been a long day running across western Louisiana and southeast Texas, but CP 2816's day isn't done just yet. The train has entered one of its bigger gauntlets: the Houston Terminal.
The Final Spike Tour is approaching the junction at Tower 87 alongside UP's massive Englewood Yard in northeast Houston. With a hump job on one side, and a line of pace cars on the other, the Empress will be navigating a number of tight interlockings and junctions as the train works its way past Englewood and through Houston.

After appearing in Laredo for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Ottensmeyer Bridge (the new international bridge over the Rio Grande into Mexico), KCS 1 and the Southern Belle business train are now hightailing it eastward. The train is headed to Shreveport this evening to pick up supplies, then will make a quick turn-around and roll through the night down to New Orleans for the Super Bowl.
Here, the former KCS F9 trio rolls down Winter St in Houston's First Ward. This is on UP's Houston Sub, part of the 120 or so miles of trackage rights CPKC trains use between Rosenberg and Beaumont, TX. At Beaumont, the biz train will return to CPKC rails and head north for Shreveport.

A CP extra job has finished wyeing the consist for the CP business train at Southwest JCT, and now they're in the process of running the power around to the other end of the train. With the two FP9A's, they're easing down the North Ramp Track 201 at the former pig ramp at the Joint Agency KCS-CP Knoche Yard.
At the old roundhouse is a fresh, rebuilt CP SD40-2, which is part of the consist for "Run 20", which a deliver a transfer to BNSF's Argentine Yard later on this evening. 10/22/22.
A weekend of model RR operating brought me back to Illinois, so on Monday I returned in search of the KJRY F units which I shot last February. Finding nothing in Mapleton, I drove to La Harpe where I found the crew would be called for 1330, so I ended up spending the morning killing a few hours shooting the BNSF "Transcon" around Lomax. Returning to La Harpe, I caught the Keokuk job arriving around 1300 (I would have hunted him earlier had I known) and got both jobs switching around La Harpe before the F's headed east behind the GP20, which I believe was returning to Mapleton for it's transfer assignment. This is one of the few views I grabbed of the F's uncovered while switching at La Harpe.
This is the second year in a row where I was on a road trip railfanning on 9/11. Last year I was shooting steam on the Nevada Northern... I am already wondering where I will be on 9/11 in 2018.

Nothing more to say than this was beautiful, regardless of the wet and cloudy weather. As I hustled down from the Central Ave. overpass the train was coming to a stop for a red signal. I heard some chatter on the radio and realized if I was quick, I could beat it to Galewood for one more shot. Was really excited to catch it one last time.
This is something that will assuredly never happen again so despite the gloomy day I'm glad I got the chance to document it and have a little fun with some friends trackside. So one more from this day when half of the OCS duo came to Worcester, but not via home rails.

OCS Extra PAR 2 gets back underway at Cumberland Center after stopping to ensure the crossing would activate. Due to a late POWA, the OCS was delayed until after 2, and I was able to get out of work with enough time to intercept at Winthrop. District 1 would hold the OCS at 185 to allow Amtrak 685 to head to Portland on track 1. Once 685 cleared, the OCS proceeded to 189, where they met Amtrak 688 headed to Brunswick. This would have allowed plenty of time to beat them to Portland, but I decided to wait and shoot the second Downeaster.

Severely kicking my ass for not marking off the week before for the southbound trip I said fuck it and tried my luck for the northbound and boy was that a cluster but worth it. 41B cruises into Buffalo Iowa back on track for the northbound departure time but that is where it ends. Once getting into the yard the train would rot away for 4 hours before finally getting a call to head north, the train would take forever to get going, crawled through the quad cities which helped a couple photos. From there they would get stabbed in Clinton by UP and a mess at Sabula for a combined couple hours killied any hopes of me struggling north of Bellevue for shots before heading home. 960 mile trip, 42hrs no sleep and lots of "will you fucking move" later this night shot made it worth it for me.
