CP 4107 rounds the curve at Maple Lake. The RCP was in the Twin Cities for the 2016 Ryder Cup Golf Tournament at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, MN. A big tip of the hat goes to Andy C. for not only clearing some brush but also asking the property owner for permission to stand up on the hill in his field.

The locomotive had just arrived from rebuild and would make its first revenue trip a few days later.
Kansas City Southern classic set of Southern Belle A-B-A set of FP9As and one FP9B are in charge of their company business train running as a BKCSH, as they charge southbound across the rural farmland of Western Arkansas on the KCS Shreveport Sub. Seen here passing a local farm in the small town of Hatton, AR, disturbing a pair of Cow’s peaceful afternoon graze near this nicely placed pond on their deadhead trip back to home base of Shreveport, LA. On its deadhead run for Kansas City, train BSHKC-17 snakes through the S curve northbound along the Big Creek just outside of Page, OK while easing down the famous “Rich Mountain” with the A-B-A set of Kansas City Southern FP9As (KCS 2 and KCS 1) on the KCS Shreveport Sub. It’s the beginning of spring so the mountain wasn’t yet “colorful” with all the dead trees but this was just day 1 that ended up beginning at Mooringsport, LA for a 1500 mile total chase over a span of 3 days. Now outside of downtown Kansas City, the Kansas City Southern OCS or BKCKC heads south for its round trip dinner train from KC to Amsterdam, MO. Seen here with the A-B-A set of F units, as the engineer puts the KCS 1 in run 8 for the trip upgrade while crossing the 94 year old Stone Arch bridge over the Blue Parkway on the KCS Pittsburg Sub. Looking back on this day in 2021 following the CP OCS I'm really glad I didn't fly home to Connecticut for the weekend as I had originally planned. The chase across Minnesota ended up being an experience of a lifetime and I met some great friends along the way. Seen here is Canada Pacific train 41B on its way back to Canada approaching 210th Ave outside of Barret, MN on the CP Elbow Lake Sub. This without a doubt is the best looking train in North America at present and it was an absolute pleasure spending a day photographing it.
Under code blue skies on a gorgeous afternoon in rural western Missouri, the Kansas City Southern OCS or BKCKC, is in the midst of its southbound dinner train bound for Amsterdam, MO before turning back north for Kansas City. Seen here on the outskirts of the small town of Drexel, MO, skirting across the local “Lisle Pond” with the A-B-A set of FP9As on the KCS Pittsburg Sub. Taken: 3-19-22
The day prior, lots of tree trimming had to be done along the shore to make this shot possible. Some measures are really takin into consideration for the term “anything for the shot”
Tuscan & Grey -- the way it oughta be! With a successful tour of St. John, New Brunswick and the former Central Maine & Quebec behind her, Canadian Pacific train no. 41B takes in the autumnal splendour at Parry Sound, Ont., as she presses on the westward odyssey to Calgary on October 8, 2021.

Five years ago we find the KJRY F units between Canton and Cuba, IL. Soon they will be switching out stored cars from the Cuba siding while the overcast skies would break up, making for a pursuit that just got better and better.

The morning fog is still lingering around the Tombigbee River in western Alabama as Kansas City Southern Railways office car train steps over a flood area along Norfolk Southern's AGS South District on a special trip between Meridian, MS to Atlanta, GA.
After completing their assault over Rich Mountain, the Kansas City Southern’s OCS or BKCSH, descends southbound into the small town of Mena, Arkansas with a classic F unit A-B-A set behind their gorgeous passenger train. Seen here with the KCS 1, screaming into town in notch 8 on the KCS Shreveport Sub, leaving the famous Rich Mountain behind on their deadhead trip from Kansas City, Missouri back to Shreveport, Louisiana. After crossing the resort town of Bromont, CP's sharp-looking business train charges west through Adamsville on its way to St. Luc yard from Jackman, ME.
PAR #1 and #2 lead the Pan Am OCS past the 1895 Maine Central freight house in Monmouth, Maine on the former MEC Back Road.
41B rolls north through downtown Davenport through an area well known for flooding and also well known for the photos of CP rolling through the waters to keep the freight moving.
At the wonderful Spadina Ave. roundhouse in Toronto finding freshly shopped CN FP9A 6532 being turned as the shop crew closes up the front steam line access doors - June 22, 1975.
I just realized that I could put Good Time Industries in the Fallen Flags Group.. Trailing the units is the CSX Business car that Pan Am bought. In it's shorttime of the property I think had 2 maybe 3 names.
The Pan Am Fs lead the OCS across the Androscoggin River as seen from the Veterans Memorial Park in Lewiston, Maine which includes an Army Willys CJ-5 and a tribute to the U.S.S. Maine (including a ten-inch shell salvaged from the wreck in Havana).
Several people I follow posted really good shots of the CP 150 train heading back west at Palgrave, ON. One even remarked how it might have looked similar 60 years ago. Well this one is only 39 years ago, and the F's are in the MultiMark or Pacman scheme, and the foliage hasn't yet filled in making it an even better place to catch the Canadian on the early fall afternoon of September 4, 1978. Back to back FP9A's leading the westbound Toronto section of the Canadian.
Having just left Windsor a late running VIA #76 blasts through Tecumseh, Ontario behind FP9A 6610 on February 12, 1988
Since being established in 1881, the Canadian Pacific Railway has been a vital part of the North American way of life. For 109 years, CP strictly operated in Canada with only trackage rights into the US before getting full control of the SOO LINE in 1990, accessing their own trackage into the busy rail hub of Chicago, Illinois and vise versa. Now 33 years later, they have merged with Kansas City Southern now having trackage from Canada to Mexico without leaving their own rails. The face of the Canadian Pacific that’s had many names, such as Canadian Pacific Railway, CPRAIL, CPRAIL System, and once again, Canadian Pacific. Time will tell how much they’ll change their current imagine, as they’ve already inter-graded the “CPKC” initials into their company regime around the countries. As of 23:59 of April 13th, 2023, The Canadian Pacific Railway has merged with the Kansas City Southern Railway.
With that said, looking back at simpler times of Autumn 2023 along the mighty Mississippi River, the Royal Canadian Business Train is freshly loaded with the company President / CEO Keith Cruel as they sneak through the S curve along the former DME in the small town of Brownsville, Minnesota with the beautifully painted pair of FP9As and FP9B (CP 1401/4106/1900) heading south for Kansas City for a major meeting with KCS management on the CP Marquette Sub. Taken: 10-20-23
My fanatic sense for the Canadian Pacific became when I was just 5-6 years old, ridding cross country with my family on VIA RAIL’s Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. For as young as I was, my favorite movie at the time was Silver Streak 1976, the same current train set VIA uses today. I guess you could really say I was a kid in a candy store, ridding my favorite train from my favorite railroad, even in its new ownership. As a fan looking from the outside in, the transition with KCS will be quite a weird one, we can only hope the image of CP won’t change and KCS will be just like every other railroad that’s been merged, a thing of the past…..but not forgotten. But lets not forget that the CP some of us know and love is also changing, in my eyes for the worse but time will tell how much they change their corporate image that I’ve been a fan of for than 18 years..
CP's business train rolls through downtown Magog, where it skirts the Magog river for about half a mile before turning northwest towards the mighty Mount Orford.
The overnight VIA train #98 the "Northland" from Cochrane, Ontario meets sun light passing underneath the CPR mainline in the Don Valley of northern Toronto with FP9A 6540 leading the way - September 24, 1978.

VIA train #71 arrives in Walkerville (Windsor) Ontario behind FP9A 6529 with a consist of tempo passenger cars, the HEP equipped baggage car provides the electrical power for the train - April 25, 1983.
This chase was the gamble that paid off! The forecast originally calling for a rainy day and with the early morning departure from Saint Paul the light would have been poor for the chase west anyway. But since I'm already in Minnesota for a few months, I figured it was worth going out anyway since we don't get the opportunity to shoot the CP OCS very often back east. Since the train was a deadhead move it was a low priority. This worked out in my favor as it ended up taking the siding quite a few times for revenue trains. This gave time for the light to swing around and the sun to come out. By sunset I was in North Dakota and very happy with the results!

Canadian Pacific's Officers Special rolls through the small town of Dresbach, MN on a beautiful fall morning. The combination of fall colors, morning light, and the classy train all made for a wonderful scene. Video will be up shortly!
BUGX 1752, a former Keokuk Junction Railway FP9A and likely the only F unit hauling freight in the US this day, leads a freight from Kingsland toward St Marys, Georgia on the St Marys Railroad. The unit is occasionally used to haul excursions on the weekends but was filling in this day for the MP15DC undergoing maintenance. The St. Marys Railroad currently has four customers (in addition to many storage and car cleaning clients): Georgia Pacific, Bocks Board Packaging, Synergy, and the Kings Bay Naval Base.
Dan Kwarciany recently uploaded one of his shots from the 2016 visit of the CP Fs to the Twin Cities, and jogged my memory that this was in the archives.
I've got quite a few years left in me, lord willing, but I'm fairly confident this will go down as a top ten lifetime chase - had a gorgeous train in great light, was covering new territory (I believe this is the only time I've chased anything west of the metro on CP), and got to chase it all the way to North Dakota - couldn't have asked for anything more.
VIA Rail train #77 is approaching it's destination of Windsor, Ontario in primo evening light with FP9A 6519 leading the way with a "VIA" nose lettering on May 11, 1982.
The CP Business Train begins it's eastbound trip out of Calgary, as the crew aboard CP 1401 stares into the early morning sunlight.
Having pulled to a stop at the north end of the yard, train 41B will sit and rot for a few hours waiting on fuel and a new crew. While it sucks that it sat for so long their placement was almost perfect for time exposures and details shots. The sky is already starting to glow as the morning sun works its way up.
In 2017 the Keokuk Junction F units are approaching Bushnell as the clouds break up. Arrival in La Harpe would not be until after sunset.
Yesterdays announcement and ruling from the STB yesterday is one that was expected but not really wanted for most. Soon two long lasting and classic railroads will merge as one, under an unimaginative nor creative name. In Better times back in December the 2022 Santa Express is in Higginsville MO on a beautiful evening. The classic F's look great on the head end of the train and everyone wonders this merger will mean for the railroads moving forward.
The "Canton Cannonball" approaches the diamond with the former Burlington at Bushnell, operating westward on the former Toledo, Peoria & Western mainline. Leading the way are two former Algoma Central Railway FP9A units purchased by Pioneer Lines in the mid-2000s. With a recent change in ownership, these units will now be sidelined and put up for sale, ending over a decade of service on the former TP&W. This was part of a memorable week-long trip to the Midwest in the middle of the never-ending Winter of 2014-15. We had intentions of going to warmer climes, but the weather forced us to go to Plan C. I sure am glad it did! Special thanks to Pete Ruesch for showing us around this day, as well as getting us South Shore Freight action, along with John Means, the day before and later showing us around the Indiana Railroad with Chris Thompson.
Kansas City Southern FP9(A) #1 leads NS #089 out of the siding at Villa Rica after meeting Amtrak #20. KCS and NS execs rode from Meridian, MS to Atlanta, GA that morning then the train deadheaded back west to home rails.
GBSOA heads east at Kinross with 1752, 1754, 1756 and 1751 leading 40 cars on July 28, 1998. On this day WC came up short of power at Steelton and the old Fs were all that was available to get train SOGBA started on its trip toward Gladstone. When SOGBA met eastbound GBSOA at Rudyard power was swapped and the F's headed back to Steelton. Total clouds on this day, not one peak of sun broke out but FP9 leaders in freight service were rare so I was out doing what I could to get some shots.
CP SD70ACu 7019 leads train 41B-03 across Squaw Brook in Big Moose Township, ME on 10/3/2021. After shooting at Tarratine, the train had a few slow orders, so I took the opportunity to hike out to Squaw Brook. I didn't anticipate the hike to be a long one, since I saw a crossing that was close by on Google Earth. That plan quickly fell apart, since the landowner (or someone doing work at the property) didn't want me driving to the crossing, but they said it was fine as long as I walked in. Which ended up being a lot further than I expected, and as a result, I ended up missing the shot at Onawa which I had been looking forward to. But regardless, I was happy with how this shot came out.

While the few left chasing shot the Maquoketa River bridge behind me it was less than stellar due to large gardrails and handrails blocking a lot of the frame down, I chose this shot across the field just to the east with the train crossing a bridge with the sole purpose of passing over a very small pond.
If you're not familiar with Buc-ee's, I'm sorry. The Texas-sized gas station & convenience store chain has a devoted following for their incredible food, merchandise, and billboards.
In a scene you can only find in southeast Texas, KCS's business train races past a billboard advertising the fudge counter at the Buc-ee's store in Wharton.
