Charging down the former Milwaukee Road, now the CP Laredo Sub, up to the Highway 6 overpass at Galt, MO is the Royal Canadian Pacific Business Train, operating as CP train 40B.

They're headed for Kansas City as part of an inspection trip, and they'll arrive later this evening at the Joint Agency Knoche Yard, which is shared with CPKC merger partner KCS. The two FP9A's and a portion of the passenger equipment will later be moved to Kansas City's Union Station for display before returning north to Canada.

Just behind me on the other side of the overpass is where the MILW crossed the Quincy, Omaha and Kansas City Railroad, better known as "The OK Railroad". They were eventually absorbed by the CB&Q, and their route has long since been abandoned. 10/21/22.

Amsterdam the day prior. The train will have to wait the entire day due to there being no rested crews in time. In the morning, the train would take the CPKC Pittsburgh Subdivision southbound toward Shreveport. Two of the former KCS passenger cars have been repainted into Canadian Pacific maroon for the CPKC takeover.

On the morning of December 30th, I had my first encounter with a plow, which was being shoved by two F units dispatching some leftover drifts on the Port Burwell sub to Tillsonburg. It wasn't a whiteout blizzard but it was an experience all its own regardless.

RMR 8012 and CP 1401 sit side by side at the Banff station after both arriving earlier in the evening. Two of Canada's most beautiful train sets.

After overnighting at KCS's Kendleton Yard near Houston, the KCS business train shoves out from the north end of the yard and onto the siding. After the crewman to the left throws the switch, they'll resume their journey south to Laredo to attend the groundbreaking of the new US-Mexico rail bridge there.

Also, with KCS's growing business to Mexico and southeast Texas, Kendleton Yard is expanding. The track under construction to the left is a new, extended yard lead.

Yet another view of the KJRY F units on F-unit Friday as they back down to pick up their EB train for Mapleton.

A span of just 65 minutes and 9 seconds separate these two frames captured at Seebe, Alberta, showcasing CPKC's proud heritage in motion.

At 1635 hrs, just over an hour after CP 7010 passed through, the light has sweetened ever-so as CP EMD FP9A 1401 guides the Royal Canadian Pacific towards Banff along CPKC’s scenic Laggan Subdivision at Seebe, Alberta.

The pair of former Railink FP9A's lead their short train south towards St Thomas.

Back in 2019, Utah's Heber Valley Railroad acquired an FP9ARM locomotive from the BC chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. It was originally built Canadian National FP9A No. 6524 by GMD in April 1957.

Back in Dec. 1983, the FP9A was remanufactured in Canadian National's Pointe St-Charles shops to an 1800 HP FP9ARM for use on VIA Rail. Tragically, on Feb. 4, 1986 it was wrecked in a deadly collision on the Super Continental passenger train. VIA 6300 survived that wreck, receiving a rebuilt cab from a Kansas City Southern F7.

Plans are underway to repaint it as a Rio Grande "stand in" locomotive, wearing Aspen Gold and silver paint in D&RGW's 1950s four-stripe paint scheme. Modifications are to include restoration of the skirting above the fuel tank, with the recent installation of a nose door with a proper headlight.

Even through a GMD FP9A model is 4 feet longer than the F-units rostered on the D&RGW, the potential is there for an attractive locomotive pulling a luxury train of streamlined passenger cars on a cheese and wine tasting experience through Heber Valley and Provo Canyon.

Ontario Southland's thrice weekly job to St. Thomas trundles by an old barn on the outskirts of town. Thanks goes to Greg M. for letting me use his long lens for this shot, and providing stories of St. Thomas' glory days in the 1970s.

Built in March of 1957, VIA FP9A-6525 is leading an E/B train just off of CN's Dundas Sub onto the Oakville Sub. This view from the pedestrian walk-over bridge at the Royal Botanical Gardens. Based on the time of the photo, if this is train #80, the St. Clair, it is running early. Could be unnamed train 682, scheduled to depart Sarnia at 0810 with arrival in Burlington West at 1051.

The original plan for this shot was to shoot the business train going through the curve here, but the clouds had other ideas. Though as it turns out, the last frame before the train reached the cloud came out nicely too.

CP 1401 leads the RCP to Field where they will stop for lunch and wye the train for their return back to Calgary.

Pacing CP's classic EMD's on their business train "40B" doing every ounce of track speed on the Paynesville Sub was impressive to say the least. Describing it as "a well oiled machine" doesn't do it justice.

Here we see the train ripping along route 59 somewhere between Mahnomen and Bejou, with EMD FP9A #1401 in charge.

Ontario Southland 378 is enroute to St. Thomas. FP9A 1401 is following behind. After doing some switching here 1401 will be enroute to Putnam before heading back this way enroute to the CP interchange in Woodstock.

Following the route of Kansas City Southern’s well known Southern Belle Passenger train before is discontinuance in 1969, KCS’s Business train is south of Watts, making its way through far eastern Oklahoma. The train, reminiscent of the Southern Belle itself, is heading back to Shreveport, LA after a ceremony in Kansas City, MO for Michael Haverty. The name of who is now displayed below the cab window of KCS1.

CPKC 40B continues east through Eden Valley, Minnesota.

OSR's freshly repainted FP9A leads the Woodstock job as it approaches the job's namesake town.

The fact that a 61year old FP9A has received a brand new coat of paint while still regularly hauling revenue freight in 2015 is rather remarkable, not to mention applying a nice paint scheme at that! And for that I applaud OSR!

Back into the wonderful years of steam and excursions on the Ohio Central thanks to Jerry Jacobsen. Here in fresh PRR inspired paint the pair of FP9A's bring a freight consist from Morgan Run up to Sugar Creek, Ohio. This consist for GTW 6325 to use for the days photo excursion on October 7, 2002.

Back at the start of June, 2019 Pittsfield was celebrating its 250th anniversary. In celebration locally based Cianbro Construction, which is one of the largest construction companies in the US, restored the former MEC Pittsfield Depot and spruced up the grounds around it.

As a surprise, CEO Pete Vigue chartered the Pan Am OCS, to make a guest appearance at the festivities, where tours were offered to the general public.

My barber is good friends with Pete and gave me an advanced heads up about the event. Overall, it was a good event and the train drew a few hundred visitors.

CP 7019 leads the CP OCS around the "Drop In" curve at Long Pond, after a delay at Jackman. The generator car had died, leaving the train without power, so the B unit had to be repositioned to provide power to the train. While it didn't really effect the lighting on the Moosehead side of things, the Mattawamkeag Sub was a different story.

Coming into the small Western Illinois town of New Philadelphia, an A-B-A set of former Canadian National F9s briefly pause their westbound trek towards La Harpe. The conductor will get in a vehicle staged here and will meet the train in Bushnell to switch the ADM Dog Food plant, the last customer of the day, before continuing on towards La Harpe.

Gliding across the Middle Foster Bridge on the CPKC Laredo Sub. we see CPKC Train 40B-11 led by none other than CP 2816, "The Empress" on a Davenport, IA to Kansas City, MO segment of its "Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tour". Playing second fiddle trailing today are a pair of FP9A's from the business train fleet; any other day would be the primary focus.

CP 2816, known as "The Empress" is a H-1b Class 4-6-4 "Hudson" locomotive built in December 1930 by the Montreal Locomotive Works. It carries a builder number of 68535. The locomotive was retired in 1960 and languished in the Steamtown collection for several decades before being reacquired in 1998 by Canadian Pacific Railway for excursion service.

It was returned to service in 2001 and operated in Canada and the US until 2010. The engine was returned to service first in 2020 for tests in Canada, and was rebuilt in 2023 for the "Final Spike Anniversary Steam Tour" to Mexico City commemorating the one year anniversary of the CP-KCS Merger.

On our forays into southwestern Ontario we would alway see something out of the norm and this day January 3, 1983 was no different. Here a scruffy well worn tempo RS18 3155 leads an F9B and FP9A and the twelve cars of VIA #74 into Komoka, Ontario off the Chathan Subdivision.

I have many shots of the Searchmont station with south bounds passing them in good light, north bounds never were really lit well in this locations and I seldom shot them here. I picked one of the longest days of the year to try to catch one of the first Canyon tours of the year passing the station with halfway decent light on it. 1755 and 1754 lead a short train 3 north on June 7, 1997. Even with the station closed and the lower windows boarded up it made for a nice backdrop.

With the sun shining and the birds singing, it is a gorgeous August morning as Canadian Pacific train no. 40B races along the Belleville Subdivision at Cherrywood. Fresh out of Toronto yard, the train will make good time across Eastern Ontario before changing crews at Smiths Falls and crossing into Quebec for their next show in Montreal.

Stephen Host and I chased the train 190 rail-miles east to Smiths Falls before calling it a day. Despite being out late playing rock n' roll the previous night and running on less than 2 hours of sleep, it was an exhilarating chase that was well worth the early morning. Thanks to everyone who kept us west-enders "in the know" on our chase from Toronto to Smiths Falls!

Canadian Pacific 40B descends the mountain grade into Hamilton with a gorgeous train celebrating Canada's 150th birthday. At this particular vantage point, many other railfans snapped photos of this train's memorable run down the Hamilton Subdivision.

The matching pair of RLK FP9A's heads for the shot at Salford after a day of running to Woodstock and back.

Remnants of 6508's former paint scheme litter the shop track as she is prepared to receive a fresh coat of paint at the OSR's Salford, ON facility.

Rolling southwesterly toward St. Thomas, this Ontario Southland plow extra is clearing a deep drift just east of Belmont, Ontario on former Canadian Pacific trackage. The pair of FP9A diesels are wide open here giving a little smoke pushing through this deep snow, great times with friends February 17, 2015.

After the Shebrooke roadmaster was let off and the Montreal roadmaster got on at the Farnham station, CP 41B is on its way to Montreal. Power is CP 1401, CP 7019 & CP 1900.

Moving a freight consist northward for a OC/GTW 6325 photo charter the Ohio Central former VIA FP9A's look sweet in early morning lighting just south of Sugar Creek, Ohio on October 7, 2002.

A CP extra job has finished wyeing the consist for the CP business train at Southwest JCT, and now they're in the process of running the power around to the other end of the train. With the two FP9A's, they're easing past the old roundhouse on the North Ramp Track 201 at the former pig ramp as they pass the FP9B on the South Ramp Track 202, which they set out prior to turning the entire train around.

The CP business train arrived into Kansas City the previous evening at the end of an inspection trip. In a couple of days, they FP9A's and part of the consist will be moved to Union Station for display before returning north to Canada. 10/22/22.

The "Royal Canadian Pacific" is about to head under the old wooden overpass near Barrett.

The RLK FP9A duo waits patiently for the crew to get onboard and start their day. OSR 51 however sits at the end of the deadline waiting for a chance to return to service.

A real class act by the railroad, as they did everything for the Railfan’s out chasing the final farewell. Taken: 8-7-19.

Not a combination one would historically have ever expected to see, but in the 21st Century KCS trains regularly pass the Southern Pacific depot at Wharton, southwest of Houston. Although SP abandoned this line in the late 1980's, KCS purchased and rebuilt it 20 years later (and KCS put a new sign on the depot).

Here, KCS's Southern Belle business train rolls past the Wharton depot on its way to Laredo for the groundbreaking of a new international bridge to Mexico.
