I suppose I should stop and comment on this photograph a little.
The encampment was pretty large and spread out around a vast park area. Wandering from camp site to camp site I stumbled upon these young men practicing for a battle demonstration that was to take place later that morning. Usually timid, I screwed up my courage to ask them if I could take their photo. Imagine my surprise when they said yes and asked where I wanted them to pose. Quickly pointing to a park bench they climbed on and set themselves up just as if they'd posed like this all the time. I moved them around just a little, snapped a couple photos and prayed that I'd get the development right. All this is not immediately evident when looking at the photo, which is why I wanted to share the story about how this has become one of my favorite images. It still "hooks" me, even after all these 30+ years.
In 1995 I visited an American Civil War reenactment with a Mamiya C220 with 80mm f/2.8 and Ilford FP4Plus souped in Kodak D76. It was a nice setup and I really enjoyed photographing people in their various camps.
