Artist: Katrin Ströbel
Gallery: Galerie Heike Strelow
Born 1975 in Pforzheim, Germany
The strolling Katrin Ströbel is a collectors of all the various signs and things composing our postmodern cityscapes. As an international active artist travelling around the globe she has been able to develop an artistic practice of perceptive walking comparative to the parisian writers of the 19th Century. In her drawings and installations she adheres the multilayered and cultural divers influences of our daily experiences. Arabian characters, multinational ads, quotes of literature and other artists as well as postcolonial and globalized realities get interlaced to a grid of urban fragments and individual livestyles. With her sensitive exposure Ströbel is outlining the particular esprit of the details and hence showing us the ironic, gloomy or as the case may be existential stories. At VOLTANY the artist concentrates on transcultural matters and migration, such as disorientation and the ambivalence in the confrontation of the well known and the other.

Made with found materials, yarn and fibers, while I was assisting at a Girl Scout Camp at Camp Agnes Arnold, near Willis, Texas. I wanted to show the girls how I would make my own toys when I was a child. Twigs, dried vine tendrils, fibers, approximately 10 inches high, April 2006.

made from granite cream paper, white waxed linen cord (with coptic stitch binding) and elastic; cover is made from a design colored with markers and cardboard
the elastic used for this project was originally white, so i soaked it in 1 part pure orange acrylic paint and 2 parts water for about 10 hours... when it was completely dry, i stretched the elastic to get rid of any stiffness
also, the design was done with marker which can bleed easily, so i sprayed it with a matte finish on both sides... glued it to the cardboard and finished the inside covers... then put a thick layer of tacky glue on the design (being careful to do it quickly so it wouldn't smear)... and finally, sprayed it again with matte finish
