Greenpeace’s historic ship, the Arctic Sunrise, returns to Seattle, Washington through the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. “The Arctic Sunrise is here because of the threat to Pacific Northwest communities from the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion,” said Rachel Rye Butler, a Pipeline Campaigner with Greenpeace. “The pipeline expansion would violate Indigenous sovereignty and cause a sevenfold increase in tar sands tanker traffic down the West Coast, threatening extinction of the Southern Resident Orca Whale, and jeopardizing the thousands of tourism and fishing industry jobs that depend on clean coasts.”

Oakland, CA - On October 23rd, ninety-two of the world's largest banks met in São Paulo, Brazil to vote on a policy that upholds Indigenous people's right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) to allow or disallow projects on their lands. Local activists and environmental allies protested against three of the banks involved with the financing of dirty fossil fuel projects (like the Dakota Access Pipeline and Keystone XL). The day started off with a prayer circle, followed by three divestment actions at Wells Fargo, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase. This action was part of a global divestment movement, where over 50 actions were held across the world.

WELLS FARGO DIVEST! A 'Block Party' on Wells Fargo's doorstep

July 14, 2023

San Francisco, CA

6 Climate Activists were arrested, cited and released on Friday as part of an action to demand a stop to the bank’s reckless funding of fossil fuels. Activists locked down in front of Wells Fargo's security gates, blocking the entrance and forcing the branch to close.

Outside, many local climate groups came together with live music, street theater, wheat paste and to paint a giant mural reading "WELLS FARGO--HEAT, FLOODS, FIRE--DIVEST FROM OIL & GAS".

Actress and director Bonnie Wright (R-center) joined Greenpeace USA activists including Kate Melges (R) at Coca-Cola headquarters to deliver the message accepted by Coca-Cola Communications Director Ann Moore (L) and Senior Director of Environmental Policies Ben Jordan (L-center) that more than 585,000 people want the company to abandon single-use plastics. Greenpeace launched a global campaign spanning five continents on Coke in 2017. Greenpeace is urging the company to phase out throwaway plastic, introduce reusable containers and innovative delivery systems, and ensure that all remaining packaging is 100 percent recycled.

Participants enjoy an evening campfire under the stars. Activists gather for a direct action camp designed to train the growing movement in Virginia against the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines. The objective is to teach participants ways to use our bodies to protect our communities, our lands, and our climate from powerful fossil fuel interests who want to carve up these beautiful mountains for profit.

A containment boom wraps around a car as workers assess the damage on the scene of a crude oil train derailment in Watertown, Wisconsin on November 9, 2015. The 110-car Canadian Pacific train derailed about 200pm on November 8, 2015 forcing the evacuation of about 35 homes in the area. A total of 13 cars derailed and one car was punctured, spilling less than 1,000 gallons of crude oil, according to the company. The issue of trains filled with crude oil and the potential for explosions has emerged as a concern for residents who live in bigger cities. Photo by Allen Fredrickson

Employees for UC Davis' Oiled Wildlife Care Network search for affected animals inside a containment area as crews work to contain a nearly 600 gallon oil spill in Richmond, California on February 10, 2021. As the pandemic drags on, some residents of the Bay Area faced a different kind of health emergency on February 9th: an oil spill. Around 600 gallons of an oil-and-water mixture spilled from a Chevron oil refinery in Richmond, California into the San Francisco Bay, the company told local health authorities.

The incident triggered a Level 2 health advisory from the local health department for residents of three surrounding communities, which was lifted later in the evening. Other agencies said that they are continuing the investigation, especially watching for any impacts the spill might have on wildlife.

Richmond is predominantly Black and Latino, groups often exposed to higher levels of pollution, and as a result, face more health problems. Refineries like Chevron’s have historically been sited in communities of color, while other historic injustices such as redlining have locked in still more negative public health impacts today.
