I found this fossil in that gully on my way back. Nice hinge joint.

Columbian Mammoth fossil at La Brea Tar Pits

Fossil March Fly (Plecia pealei). This creature lived during Eocene time, about 50 million years ago. This fossil is preserved in the Green River Formation, a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone. Fossil Butte National Monument. Lincoln Co., Wyo.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Had a bunch of rolls of film that I never got around to developing recently. Just got back 4 rolls from the developer. Went to Cleburne State Park with Katie. Really neat place. Lots of nice hiking trails and interesting landscape. Coolest thing was that you can occasionally see fossils along the trail as the ground has eroded away in the rain.

Fossil Flower (unknown species) preserved in the Green River Formation. Flowers are very rare in the fossil record. The taxonomy of fossil flowers is highly uncertain. Detailed identication is usually impossible because the fragile parts necessary to make an ID do not survive burial and fossilization. The Green River Formation is a laminated limestone precipitated from calcium-rich waters. The limestone is interbedded with many thin layers of volcanic ash and mudstone. Fossil Butte National Monument. Near Kemmerer, Lincoln Co., Wyo.

Within the era of scientifically accepted 'we are the cause of climate change and global warming' and its inevitable consequences, can we afford new and further exploitation of fossil fuels?

Currently Wales and the UK are awash with a tied of new fossil fuel exploitation, shale gas, coal bed methane and new open cast coal mines. So often cited as bridging too renewables, or replacing imported fossil fuels.

13 April 2014: IPCC PRESS RELEASE

Greenhouse gas emissions accelerate despite reduction efforts.

"Scenarios show that to have a likely chance of limiting the increase in global mean temperature to two degrees Celsius, means lowering global greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 70 percent compared with 2010 by mid-century, and to near-zero by the end of this century. Ambitious mitigation may even require removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere."

All of this new fossil fuel development will bridge to renewables, pay for it, not distract from it? Does our governance seem like they are leading the way to mitigating climate change, are we a shinning example to others countries to follow suit?

Doesn't a global bullet need to be bitten within a short time scale, or is the bullet simply being deflecting for future generations to deal with, and its real impact?

Need help in ID. I found this odd fossil this morning in the Miramar wetlands. I never before saw one with color like this. It appears to be two planes fused together. There are striation on the edge somewhat like scallop shell. Perhaps it is a bivalve of some sort. Miramar, south Florida. Visit rosy-finch.blogspot.com

This is a controversial fossil, the so-called "Orce Man" (Homo sp.) a cranial fragment from 1.3-1.8 million years. The piece was never fully recognized as a true hominid fossil, but lithic tools found later (1.4 m.y.) made it very factible.

The dark brown skull is only a plaster support for the fragment (on top).

Visited some remarkable fossils at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. About 240 million years old. I wonder what people/aliens in the far future will know about us. Actually ceramic toilet bowls are supposed to have amazing staying power measured in eons or kalpas.
