Rainy weather for the entire week has made getting out a shoot quite troublesome. In an effort to make anything happen with the 8x10, I found a small break in the weather that was long enough to make some quick family portraits. There's a lot of downsides to making portrait work with large format, but one big advantage is being able to change where your depth of field lies with camera movements. In these portraits I made use of a great little trick featuring some forward tilt of the front standard.

recently processed film. 4x5 large format, fotoman 45PS + fujinon 150mm lens + kodak ektar 100. lab: the icon, los angeles, ca. scan: epson V750. exif tags: filmtagger.
Dans ces terrains morainiques hétérogènes (argiles et blocs), une cristallisation sous les blocs, combinée au ruissellement des eaux de pluie qui arrache et emporte les éléments instables entraîne l'apparition de ces demoiselles coiffées. Ces creusements récents (moins de 30000 ans) se poursuivent toujours et ces "cheminées de fées" grandissent au fur et à mesure que le sol s'abaisse autour d'elles.

All-plastic box camera, produced around 1947. This 620 roll-film camera was an inexpensive option for taking medium-format snapshot photos just after WWII. It is a pseudo-TLR with a waist-level viewfinder which is not attached to the taking lens. Sometimes considered a "toy camera", the Ansco Panda may be found for low prices at second-hand sales.
The lens in my copy produces a lot of blur near the edges but the center of the plastic lens is relatively sharp by comparison.
The shutter is still snappy, which is good because there's not really any way to get into the plastic case for repair purposes.
I would recommend respooling 120 film onto a 620 spool if you want to try out the Panda. I found a trimmed-down 120 spool was a very tight fit in this old camera!

Self developed in Rollei C41 kit, standard times and agitation.
Scanned at an equivalent 8000 dpi with a stitching/macro setup and resized to about 17 Mpxls.
No sharpening or noise reduction applied.

Foto presa amb una càmera Kodak Pocket, fabricada el 1896 i venguda als magatzems El Siglo de Barcelona poc després; pel·licula Ilford Ortho 80 de 35mm adaptada al format 102, revelada amb HC110. El fet que sigui pel·licula ortocromatica ajuda a minimitzar les fuites de llum amb la finestreta posterior.
L'església de Sant Miquel del Port és la parroquia de la Barceloneta.
Fotografies amb una de les càmeres de pel·licula més antigues que tinc, una Kodak Pocket del 1895. El format 102 va deixar de fabricar-se el 1949, i és impossible de trobar. Per sort tinc dos "spools", pel que he creat una imitació de rodet de 102: retallant el paper protector del usual format 120 i fent servir pel·licula de 35mm com a substitut de la pel·licula original, de mida força similar.

Picture taken with a very early Kodak Pocket box camera, made in 1896 and sold here in Barcelona soon after; Ilford Ortho 80 35mm film respooled as 102 roll-film; developed with HC110. Using orthochromatic film helps in limiting light leaks through the back red window, as this camera was designed for orthochromatic film.
This baroque church is the main one in the Barceloneta neirbourghood in Barcelona.
Some photos with one of the oldest film cameras I have, an 1895 Kodak Pocket. The 102 format stopped being made in 1949, and is almost impossible to find, even expired. Luckily I have two 102 spools, so I created an imitation of 102 roll-film: cutting the backing paper from the usual 120 format and using 35mm film as a replacement for the original film, which was of quite similar size.
I woke up at 3:30am in Las Vegas to make it here in time. It was record cold that day and hit 34 degrees F on my drive in. The Badlands in Death Valley as viewed from Zabriskie Point at sunrise. The snow-covered Telescope Peak of the Panamint range can be seen just right of center, the highest point in the mountain range. This is stitched from several GFX files and has lots of resolution for any possible need.
