This is seen upriver from the eastern viewing platform on top of what remains of the South Fork Dam. South Fork Creek continues to flow through much as it did before 1858, and a railroad constructed after the 1889 flood runs alongside it.
From 1838 to 1852, the South Fork Dam was built across the South Fork Creek to create Lake Conemaugh, a reservoir intended to provide water for a system of canals in Pennsylvania. By the time it was completed, however, the system of canals was already outdated as railroads can transport people and items much more quickly and cheaply, and it was sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1857. The original dam failed in 1862, causing minor damage, and remained partially ruined until first sold in 1875, and then sold again in 1879 to a man who wanted to repair the dam and create a wealthy fish and game resort for wealthy Pittsburghers.
The repairs were substandard, however, and though the dam managed to hold for seven years after its reconstruction in 1881, in its eighth year, on May 31, 1889, severely heavy rains caused the reservoir to overflow and then the dam to give way, releasing some 20 million tons of water in the space of 45 minutes. One hour and 14 miles later, the waters reached the industrial city of Johnstown, where over 2,000 out of a population of 30,000 were washed away, and remains today the third-largest civilian disaster in US history.
A sunny day in March. The Assiniboine river is frozen and will be for a few weeks. The Assiniboine joins up with the Red River at the other side of the bridge. St Boniface Hospital Research Centre is at the green building at the top left of this pic.

This was an old roll of Verichrome Pan 620 film that I got with an Ansco Readyflash over eBay. I've got about 3 or 4 more rolls from the same auction to develop.

My photo of the day was just a fork on a tray. I saw this image just before it was time for dinner. I think i like wood grain in black and white and hence why i used it in this photo.

Paper pieced forks. Pattern from sew take a hike. I like the background, looks like crazy table cloths. Fork finishes at about 2 by 6 inches.Potholder is 9 by 9 inches square. Bound in a collage print.
Yet another fork potholder. Pattern adapted from Sew Take a Hike. I like how the background fabric looks like a retro tablecloth (to me).

Week #36 (w/b 15 March) Reflections - Capturing good reflections can be quite difficult as we have to think about our perspective in a different manner. Sometimes, that could mean we have to shoot the reflection upside down to catch a good image. Glass buildings, puddles and all those shiny objects in our kitchens are all great for our week of reflections.
