Photographed in upstate New York with natural light only. This scene works because of directional autumn light filtering through the canopy and landing in a clean diagonal across the dirt floor. That shadow line pulls the viewer straight toward the broken steps and the frame-within-a-frame doorway beyond.
To keep the atmosphere intact, I exposed for the highlights hitting the stone walls, letting the shadows deepen naturally. Shooting slightly stopped down preserves edge detail in the ruin, while the warm fall color balances the cool, weathered stone. No artificial light - just waiting for the sun to hit the gap at the right angle.
• Expose for the brightest stone surfaces to avoid losing texture.
• Mid apertures (around f/5.6–f/8) keep architectural details sharp.
• Look for light gaps in the trees - autumn sun is low and directional.
• Use natural leading lines (shadows, stairs, openings) to guide composition.
It's always fun to see different birds, different creatures, than we're used to seeing on campus and in town.
Granted, we didn't see anything too exotic and impressive this day, but, even so..

A path from one of the car parks. We came up here after a coffee and sandwich break because couple of geocaches were hidden beside the path.
A sight that could be found in quite a few places throughout Kamakura, the city being covered with forested mountain hiking paths, this particular staircase leads down away from the graves of Shimazu Tadahisa, Môri Suemitsu, and Ôe no Hiromoto, back to the street, the residential area.
This winding New England path is nearly paved with the first leaves of fall, creating a dreamlike walk down memory lane.
Muir Woods National Monument in the fall; nearly dusk, cold with mist starting to rise up from the stream, the crowds have all gone home and it's still and peaceful; a beautiful place to be.
Nice and open in most parts, for easy hiking, but still surrounded by virgin forest. A beautiful, wonderful feeling of escape, into another world almost.

Autumnal scene where sunrays lightens up a forestpath. Taken early in the morning, air still moisture. Location: Amsterdam forest. This forest is beloved by many people living in Amsterdam, because it's a very relaxing and peaceful place, the sunrays just added that little more to make this a spot i'll never forget.
