I’ve been dreaming about creating spooky, moody, witchy photographs on my property all summer, and yesterday I finally brought some of those ideas to life.
My friend Bonnie and I met nearly 20 years ago when we both worked for the now-defunct Ritz Camera. She has been one of my favorite muses throughout my photography journey, and all summer I’ve been sending her inspiration images and telling her she needed to come visit the farm because I HAD SO MANY IDEAS.
We finally did it.
About seven hours of hauling furniture into the woods, styling sets, chasing light, playing with smoke and fire, and turning this little corner of the forest into another world. My back is absolutely spent, but I came away with so many magical, powerful photographs of this incredible woman.
There’s another layer to creating images like this for me.
Back in 2007, I was offered a position as a staff photographer for SuicideGirls. I was young, intimidated, and absolutely drowning in imposter syndrome. Instead of believing that someone saw something worthwhile in my work, I convinced myself I wasn’t good enough and never followed through.
Nearly 20 years later, I still think about that sometimes.
This year, I’ve been making a conscious effort to create simply for the sake of creating again. To trust my own ideas. To make the weird things, the beautiful things, the dark things, and the images that exist in my imagination just because I want to know what they’ll look like when I bring them into the real world.
And maybe, somewhere along the way, learn to believe in myself a little more as a human, a woman, and an artist.
This shoot felt like a little piece of all of that. ✨
