Alt und so schön.

There was a slight fog lingering in the air from the morning which didn't add a great deal of atmosphere but did diffuse the light enough to make conditions great for a little bit more woodland photography.

I stayed local and took a walk across the tracks and into the countryside just a few minutes from my house. I spotted this one in the summer and had it at the back of my mind for autumn, turns out I returned at just the right time.

This is the part where I should say something like; "the branches represent the tendrils of winter reaching out to claim the woodland for the winter" and some of my photographs definitely do have a narrative behind them, but really, I thought the backlight looked rather pretty to my eye.

There are numerous remnants of human activity in Padley Gorge, related largely to the quarrying that happened in the area. A large cutting and ramp works it's way up the gritstone creating a trackway to Lawrence Field which is full of root systems, vegetation and trees.

It’s incredible to see the way that nature is slowly reclaiming and repairing these human made disturbances, although the impression left will always be there to some degree.

This Douglas-fir stands along a quiet Qathet trail, its trunk rising in a slow, graceful curve before disappearing into the misted canopy. Moss climbs the bark like soft green fire, catching the dim coastal light and deepening the sense of calm that settles over the forest. Standing beneath it feels almost otherworldly—the air cooler, the sounds muted, the whole scene wrapped in that quiet magic you only find on a slow hike through these coastal woods. It’s a tree that doesn’t just grow upward; it draws you into its stillness.

Standing tall through the shifting seasons, this old tree reminds us that change is a form of strength.

Each branch tells a story of growth, resilience, and time — painted in the quiet fire of autumn.

Captured in the calm of the forest, where silence speaks and colors breathe.

It was a peaceful morning in the forest today. The sunlight danced through the trees, casting gentle shadows on the moss-covered ground. The fresh, already autumnal air and the delicate play of light and shadow gave this moment a special magic. It amazes me how serene nature is in the early morning – as if time stands still. 🌲✨

Buona giornata

“Even the smallest light may guide us through the deepest shadows — for hope, like magic, dwells in humble places.”

"... every child can remember laying his head in the grass, staring into the infinitesimal forest and seeing it grow populous with fairy armies ..." – Robert Louis Stevenson

I wanted to be too cool for school and avoid this season's bluebell hype, but I went for a local bike ride to Skellingthorpe Old Wood and found myself very much getting involved.

Although Old Wood is managed by the Woodland Trust as plantation, there are sections that haven’t been managed in many years and are covered in carpets of these delicate flowers. I moved very carefully in this section of the woods following animal trails created by the deer, bluebells are very sensitive to disturbance and I like the follow the “leave no trace” principle as much as possible when I navigate sections off-footpath.

This is a tableaux I happened across deep into a stand of mainly birch, an Ash tree stood on the embankment of a dried up stream catching the last of the evenings side-light surrounded by blue. The sounds were incredible, birds singing their last flurry of song before the sun set and the aroma of pollen, birch and pine oil filled the air. If only for the experience, this photograph was well worth taking.

Nature’s way of reminding us to slow down and soak in the little things—like the sun playing peek-a-boo through autumn’s delicate embrace. The crisp morning air, the whisper of leaves, and that golden light make this moment feel like pure magic. 🌞🍂

Captured during a peaceful stroll, this scene is all about finding serenity in simplicity. Let the light guide you. ✨

Winter without snow, most of the land looking grey, but then one late afternoon the late light falls through the leafless trees by the lake...

Bamboo....no, asparagus?

As the sun dips low, the trees cast long shadows over a golden bed of autumn leaves. A fleeting moment where light and shadow dance together in perfect harmony.

It's too warm to think of anything lyrical to write. This is one from last year, taken on a warm summers day after the ferns had fully unfurled and the canopy at Padley Gorge had filled in; producing a gorgeous yellow/green glow throughout the woods.

Mossy logs thrown in for good measure.

Enjoy!
