On this first day of spring I made a journey into the woods in search of wildflowers. These are Mayapples, very young ones. Once in full leaf they will be the size of dinner plates.

Environmental Funding Bypasses Indigenous Communities

BALI, September 16, 2014 (IPS)— When she talks about the forests in her native Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo, Maridiana Deren’s facial expression changes. The calm, almost shy person is transformed into an emotionally charged woman, her fists clench and she stares wide-eyed at whoever is listening to her.

In the dim waste lands of the orient, stands the wreck of a race old and vast that the greyest legend cannot lay hands on a single fact of it's tongueless past.

The barred owl (Strix varia) has a distinct vocalization often described as a series of hoots. It is known for its characteristic call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?"

Dunnocks (Prunella modularis) are small, inconspicuous songbirds often found in gardens, hedgerows, and woodlands. They have a streaked brown back, a greyish head, and a slender beak well-suited for feeding on insects and seeds. Blackbirds (Turdus merula) are one of the most common and recognizable birds in the UK. Males are entirely black with a bright yellow beak and eye-ring, while females are brown with streaks on their breast. They are skilled singers, producing melodious songs that help establish territories and attract mates. Blackbirds play a vital role in ecosystems by controlling insect populations and dispersing seeds. They are adaptable birds, thriving in gardens, woodlands, and urban areas. Their population increases in winter as migrants from northern Europe join resident birds.

On November 19-20 2009 nearly 2000 people from different parts of the country converged in Delhi, on the day when the winter session of the Parliament was beginning, to demand not passing of Land Acquisition (Amendment) and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bills in the present form. They were affected by large developmental projects - dams, highways, mines etc - and farmers, forestdwellers who are adversely affected by the wrong policies of the government.

If passed in the present form, it will further pauperize the poor and make them vulnerable for further displacement, without any rehabilitation.
