This was another shot from Monday's search for "that field".

This was taken first with my wide angle lens & the 365 zoom shot was taken from exactly the same position & angle, the clouds were better for this one, by the time i got round to swapping in my crappy zoom lens the rain clouds had swept in, and "softened" everything... and then the heavens opened... lesson learnt - Always bring a raincoat.

This old abandoned church sits on the banks of a small bayou off Highway 61 just south of Arcola Mississippi. I noticed it a few weeks ago when I attended my cousin's funeral in Louisiana. On the way home I just had to stop and get a photo. A perfect shot for Slider Sunday.

On the Road again.

A couple of weeks ago we decided to meet the kids in Ames for a Sunday lunch. I decided to take the camera along. This is the first time I've had it out in a year. It felt good to have it in my hand again. I'm defintitly going get some more photographic road trips in this year. Enjoy the landscapes as we travel.

I am always reminded of the below when I am camping and having an exceptionally good time. It is a compilation of many camping trips and written down in my mind when I was about 20 years old. Still feel the same way.

My Thoughts

I can think of no greater pleasure than sitting aside a campfire on a cool morning in some remote mountain campsite awaiting the birthing of a new day.

I sit in wonder of the waning night as the newly arriving dawn urges away the shadows and yet creates them anew.

With the coming of dawn go the fears of the night. Unwarranted yes, but there just the same, something we inherited from the old ones who lived so long ago. Mayhap it is our eyesight which is so inadequate in the night. Yes, that could be the root of our forboding of the gloom. I do not profess to know. I only know that for most it is there and should not be given into.

Even the birds share the fear for there are so few out at night. Or perhaps they just know when to sleep?

These are my thoughts as I sit by the fire, these, and, many others.

I see the deer come to the yonder side of the river, hesitate only for a moment, then cross to my side of the water. They walk through camp as if the fire and I are not there, paying no heed whatsoever. And they say animals fear fire. I do not think so.

These are my thoughts. These, and, many others.

The morning clouds, moving ever so fast. Could it be they flee the coming heat of the day? Or might it just be the high flying wind pushing them along, at the moment incredibly fast? My but they are in a hurry.

These and many others are my thoughts as I sit and gaze, alternately at the fire and then the forest, and then the sky. Oh, I think of many things in the quiet morning, the silence broken only by the crackling of the fire, the distant rush of the river, the occasional chirp of bird, the chatter of the waking squirrel, leading me to understand it is his forest, that I am only a visitor. At times I think of nothing at all. My mind is as vacant as the vacuum of space. But not now. Now I am thinking of the chattering squirrel

I think, “Squirrel, it is your forest. I understand that it may only be borrowed. For such a short time will I be here, I beg for the loan of your domain. I will be here for only a moment and shall be gone, so please bear with me and allow my thoughts to continue. You see I need this time, this woefully short interval of existance in your forest. I need it to restore my sensibilities, keep my sanity and replenish my soul.”

These and many others are my thoughts as I am witness to another forest day beginning anew. I wish I had more time. Oh, how I wish I had more time.

These are my thoughts. These and many others

My son and I were raking leaves and it was getting dark when I took this.

I must've really been channeling Dresden, because this one also reminded me of 'Bob' from the books, perhaps so since it has essentially an ouija board applied. Cool concept and something that would look great on a shelf in a den.

One of the few images I took while at the Oddities & Curiosities Expo in Denver, Colorado. Taken October 2019.

Hanley Bus Station as built in 1968 was conceived as part of a shopping and leisure precinct even though it was on the fringe of what local folks regard as the town centre. Initially occupancy was high with shops of many kinds, cafes, a restaurant and attended toilets. Latterly the place became run down with hardly any businesses, a hang out for the down and outs, dirty and an altogether forboding place with no real facilities. Now it's to be replaced by a swish new station which almost by definition will be too small, but hopefully a terminal where catching a bus might not be such an irksome experience.

Here in 1982/3 as signs of the rot were setting in, Berresfords (on hire to Stonier's) ex Highland Omnibuses Ford R192 KST 367G passes West Precinct as it travels the last few hundred yards prior to entering the bus station which was at the rear of the building.

This Willowbrook bodied Ford and it's sister 360G were never the most popular buses in the fleet being noisy in the cab, having heavy steering and a manual gearbox with comedic ratios. The other Ford in the shot, a Corsair, might be more fondly remembered!

At the time Highland still hastily painted most of their disposals grey and obliterated their identity in doing so. This pair arrived with the Berresfords group at the time of the famed conflict in the South Atlantic and received the nick name Falklands buses as they looked more like troop transport.

Original shot taken with a 300mm f2.8 lens that I was lucky enough to borrow. This was beefed up with a x2 step-up ring. Photoshop bit - contrast heightened + image sharpened and false colouring added.

One of the great things about being in a city is alleys. Oft forgotten, disused, dark and forboding, they also are full of mystery and antiquities. Sometimes you can see what the sides of the building used to look like, or some old rusty bars covering a window from eighty years ago, or just find a shortcut you never knew about.

I have been trying to get just the right shot of this sign and barred windows for a bit now. I come back every now and again, try a different composition or angle...well this time it just looked right. I knew how I would process it and everything right away. Its nice when it all comes together like that.

This was taken with my OM Zuiko 50mm lens at f/8. This lens is just perfect for capturing the old, disused and the nitty-gritty I come across.

It has been there quite some time...looking at plats, it raises more questions.

Over time, the slight shift of the road from next to Moffit School, Cedar No. 3, has moved to the existing locale of 170th Ave. (The school stands today as someone's home.)

The plat maps I have seen do not indicate a house.

Feedback from questions I previously asked online:

Brenda M: My father-in-law lived here as a child. I believe it was built by his uncle Pete Marsh.

Brenda M: I need to check with my husband and my brother-in-law. Pete may have lived there and built on to it. Harold (father-in-law) had told me that there was a wood stove on the first floor with the stove pipe going up through the ceiling, through the second floor and out the roof. The kids were playing upstairs and hung a sheet up on the stovepipe (making a "blanket house"). The sheet caught on fire. His mother put the fire out. They moved to LeRoy soon after that. Phebe did not want to live alone that far out.... away from other people.... with a family of young children while Jim was working.

Brenda M: Pete and Jim's parents were John and Zilpha (Slaybaugh) Marsh. They lived just north of Slaybaugh Corners on the west side.

Josh B: It was on Forest Finkbeiners cattle pasture.

The sky was dark and forboding in places when this photo was taken. A couple hours later it was raining like crazy!

It snowed at the top of Mount Diablo. Since this is a rare thing, we decided to drive up to have a look. Everyone else had the same idea, so we got about one third of the way up and were stuck in a long line of cars. (Never did make it to the top.) Fortunately, the views from the side of the road are amazing. This is a shot of the Mount Diablo foothills descending into the San Ramon Valley.
