Time to get ready for winter, it's September after all

Remember when Guinea pigs roamed free. Well, some still do.

I was lucky enough to be sitting in my car with the window wound down and the camera resting on the window.

Wood Storks fascinate me. They have such beautiful feathers but a prehistoric-looking neck and head. I've also noticed that they have individual and unique personalities... which I've observed as they carefully make their way through the underbrush while hunting prey. What I haven't figured out, however, is what the green patch is that is on the lower part of their bodies beneath the wings and in front of the tail. Feathers that are stained with moss and mud? Distinct coloration during mating season? Or are the patches there year-round? Any ideas?

One of the few remaining species of endemic honeycreepers on the island of Oahu, the ‘amakihi still thrives in higher elevation rainforests. Recent census indicates the population is stable or increasing due to resistance to mosquito transmitted avian malaria, adaptability to feed on nonindigenous food sources, and capacity to become habituated to human presence. Often observed using its decurved bill to feed on the nectar of ‘ohi’a lehua, this male was probing bark and buds for small insects, a protein source during breeding. The Oahu ‘amakihi is one of three endemic species of ‘amakihi in the main Hawaiian Islands, a result of insular evolution. This area has had some heavy rains. Rain water has collected in some spots and wading birds love that. Saw several foraging ibises, egrets and little blue herons today. Sometimes I get closer to the birds when I shoot from the car.

The males are all about strutin' their stuff¹.

While the fems are way more secretive and job oriented,

'cause back at the nest, there are hungry mouths to feed.

¹ Though an argument could be made, that the males are workin' hard to get a potential predator's attention (that would be me) and keep them away from the family provider.

In the valley there is only about 4 inches of snow-cover which makes finding food a little easier for the deer. At a higher elevation up by our place which is just west of here about a mile, but 800 feet higher, the snow cover is 8-10 inches. Elevation makes a difference.

I made this guy on a whim, and the head idea is from Jonathon Wong. Gave him his shield and now I have a New God.

The thing i love about Tasmania is you don't have to travel very far to find some of Australia's unique wildlife. For those who don't know, this is a Wombat. It is a member of the marsupial family and is only found in Australia.

If I wait for the weather to clear, the mushrooms aren't as nice.

Besides, with an all day rain, one only needs a rain poncho to stay partially dry.

Their plumage is a cinnamon colour with contrasting black and white stripes on their wings and tails, the zebra's in the feathered world.

Was very pleased to see this male Eastern Towhee the other day foraging under one of the feeders. We don't see them too often, and usually when they do show up, they keep to the shadows. Or, when they do come out into the open, they often rush around, here and there, back and forth, which makes getting photos of them very challenging.

This fellow was nice enough to pause momentarily so I could grab a few shots. Most likely trying to decide which feeder to check under next.

Seeing a lot of echidnas on the move over recent weeks. This little guy was wandering along a bush track towards me, not aware of my presence. Had to noiselessly keep back-peddling to fit him in the frame.

We were happy to see a mother black bear with its baby in Yosemite National Park. It was fascinating to see them tearing fallen trees apart in search of some food inside. Unfortunately there were a bunch of tourists trying to get really close to them to get photos with their cell phones. I thought for sure the mother bear was going to turn and charge them. It did ultimately take off running with its baby in tow but luckily in the oposite direction. These people litterally were treating it like they were at the zoo.

Or maybe Second breakfast, or Elevenese perhaps. Hard to tell with Hummingbirds as they seemingly always to be busy with food.

Acorn Woodpecker foraging in the morning sun.

Reminiscent of a troupe of wide-eyed clowns, Acorn Woodpeckers live in large groups in western oak woodlands. Their social lives are endlessly fascinating: they store thousands of acorns each year by jamming them into specially made holes in trees. A group member is always on alert to guard the hoard from thieves, while others race through the trees giving parrot–like waka-waka calls. Their breeding behavior is equally complicated, with multiple males and females combining efforts to raise young in a single nest.
