"Setting up a foolproof electronic burglar alarm is easy with two inexpensive Knight-Kits made by Allied Radio Corp, 100 N. Western Ave, Chicago, 80, Ill. The heart of the system is an ultra-sensitive photoelectric relay which costs only $12.95 in kit form. The 'eye' is positioned to intercept an imperceptible beam of light which crosses the only path a burglar might take and it triggers the alarm the instant he breaks the beam. Stepping out of the beam avails him nothing - the alarm continues to sound."

So, if you are a regular visitor to shirt.woot, you'll eventually stumble across a shirt designed by Fablefire. And there's a good chance it might feature a character, who for lack of a better name, I will call "Meat Bunny." Dorothy looooves this character. She thinks he's hilarious. Every time he pops up on a shirt we have to grab it. (It doesn't hurt that killer bunnies appear to be a recurring theme in my shirt collection, either).

We've featured one of them before - "Meatitarian" - and today we can add this "I Heart Meat" shirt to that pile. And this week I'll be feature a bunch of other shirts from our collection that feature this character.

PS: I realize I just gave the folks over at shirt.woot a foolproof way to extract all the money from my wallet, and I'm trusting you guys not to tell them about it.

PPS: Who wants their steak stewed? Ew.

This species is a regular visitor. It likely wants to bathe or feed, and is checking out the surroundings before proceeding lower. These birds are usually spotted in large flocks; they swarm over my thistle feeder in a tumbling mass, and usually perch close enough to permit great photo ops. They are plentiful during high summer and typically ignore my presence. Sexes are determinable... but it's not foolproof, especially for first-year birds. I believe this one to be male.

The low floating branches and large leaves extending far beyond the trunk, rise and fall and twist in the quiet of a light breeze... early evening air currents flowing downhill through the tree. The phone camera has difficulty with the low light quality and the sway of the leaves... the blur describes the upward direction of movement at that moment.. Very elegant leaf sets. Facing outwards, the array of flowers as they travel in time, sit high like tall ships riding the ocean waves. Notice elsewhere young damson and cherries forming. Maybe the pollinators have been more active than I imagined. Really from what I could see, the early spring was more conducive to insect activity than the close of spring and early summer.

The carrot cake itselt was alright, but we both felt that the addition of the egg and floss was redundant~ There are too many layers; it made the taste confusing and took the limelight away from the main character - the carrot cake.

I would say just go for the pan-fried carrot cake - it doesn't really need any fancy dressing to taste good!

In a nutshell, we probably won't be back for their mains; just the safer options like fries and such, and the ever foolproof 功夫奶茶 (kung fu iced milk tea)!

Some people think that a cage can protect them from harm. They are wrong. A cage can only protect you from some kinds of harm, like angry lions or hungry sharks. But there are other kinds of harm that a cage cannot protect you from, like boredom, loneliness or existential dread. In fact, a cage might even make those things worse. So the next time you feel like hiding in a cage, remember that it's not a foolproof solution. You might be better off facing your fears and living your life to the fullest. Unless, of course, there's a lion or a shark nearby. Then you should definitely get in the cage.

I've discovered whole-wheat no-knead bread, and it's so astonishingly easy and foolproof I taught Claire to make it, too. Read here: su.pr/5TmRwJ

This year, 2026 is the centenary of the formation of Zeiss Ikon, a major player in European camera manufacture in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 20th century.

To mark this anniversary, I've decided to use a different Zeiss Ikon camera every two weeks throughout the year, a project I'm calling “Twenty-six in Twenty-six”.

Zeiss Ikon launched their series of Contaflex cameras in 1953. Over the following 20 years or so, twelve versions were made with ever increasing degrees of sophistication and indeed weight. A wide range of accessories was available, and these precision made leaf shuttered SLRs proved very popular. The Contaflex 126 is a different beast altogether, it may share the name and bear a superficial resemblance to the rest of the family, but it's something of a cuckoo in the nest.

Kodak introduced the 126, or Instamatic cartridge in 1963. It was intended to provide a simple, foolproof way for a growing numbers of less technically savvy users to load film into their cameras. Although the film is 35mm wide, the format is not the same. The film, which has one perforation per frame and sits within a plastic cartridge, is backed by a roll of paper, and gives square negatives measuring 28 x 28mm. Until very recently Instagram's native format was square, and it may be that the name itself was riffing on the Instamatic brand.

While the format was unashamedly aimed at the amateur snapshot market, many of the major manufacturers added a token higher end SLR 126 model to their range. This is a bit of a puzzle to me, one criticism of the 126 cartridge is that the absence of a pressure plate to keep the film absolutely flat might theoretically impair the image quality, yet surely any photographer with such technical concerns wouldn't be put off by the easily learnable step of loading a 35mm cassette into a camera. Nonetheless, Rollei, Kodak, Ricoh and of course the prestigious Zeiss Ikon, felt the need to pitch in.

Unlike the “normal” Contaflexes, which at best have interchangeable front elements, the 126 version has fully interchangeable lenses, though with a mount which is unique to this one model. Optical physics dictate that the longest practical focal length that can be achieved by swapping the front element is 115mm, but the 126 range of lenses went up to 200mm, though it seems that very few of these lenses were actually made. The other key difference between the 35mm and 126 Contaflexes, is that the latter employ a focal plane shutter rather than the traditional leaf shutter.

Today, with the only 126 film available being long expired, it's actually quite useful to be able to set the camera manually. The oft quoted rule of thumb that film loses sensitivity at a rate of one stop per decade, means that an ISO 100 film made in the 1970s would need to be exposed at around ISO 3 today. Most consumer Instamatic cameras won't allow this, but using an aperture of f2.8, and the shutter speed of 1/30th, it's practical to use the Contaflex 126 in reasonable daylight. The film is very expired Fujicolor Super HR 100, developed in the Bellini C41 kit.

This roast beef tenderloin looks glamorous and tastes amazing, yet it’s practically foolproof. The meat gets its deeply browned exterior in the oven at a single temperature; no pre-searing or fussing with different temperatures necessary. Even better: The deeply flavoured, thyme-infused red wine sauce can be made days ahead, so there’s no last-minute panic when it comes time to serve.

"Gonch" #1--on the way down to Gonch #2! There was a sign at the top of the shaft (inside the entry level adit that said: "Danger! Deep Gonch!") Since out motto was: "Crawl, slither, climb and scrunch through every crease, crack, crevice and opening humanly possible to do so; and since there are pix of Gonch #2 and lower levels, obviously we did!

But we weren't totally stupid (?): We took extra lights and batteries, used carbide lamps with extra carbide; we broungt extra water, emergency rations, first aide kits, knives, and ropes for bolaying and general safety. We tested all structures, especially ladders, before using them. And we had a foolproof, simple system for not getting lost in the endless labyrinth of drifts, winzes, crosscuts and mindlessly meandering stopes. But we still got a little lost, and were unbelievably lucky. We will not discuss how absolutely filthy and exhausted we were after 6-8hrs underground (nor will we even mention the reaction from signifcang females, post mission)!!! (1968)

Proper hydration is absolutely essential for our overall health. Our bodies are about 60% water and the water we consume optimizes blood pressure, regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, moves waste out of the body, and aids in digestion.

Proper hydration is especially important during the hot and humid days of summer when our bodies lose water quicker and must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Dehydration can be dangerous and cause muscle cramps, dizziness, headaches, nausea, and fainting. Older adults and young children, in particular, are susceptible to dehydration.

Recommendations vary depending on weight, age, and activity level, but a general guideline for how much water you should drink is 8, 8-ounce glasses each day. Another guideline is to divide your weight by 2 and drink that number in ounces. For example, a 150-pound person would need 75 ounces (150/2) of water per day. You should talk to your doctor to be sure that you’re drinking the right amount of water for your body type and your activity level.

Here are some more tips to help you stay hydrated:

One foolproof way to tell if you’re hydrated: urine color. An optimal lemonade-color is a sign of proper hydration. If it looks dark, like iced tea or apple juice, you’re not drinking enough water.

Don’t rely on thirst alone. Thirst can be one measure of hydration but it’s not the first means of feedback, so rehydrate before you feel too thirsty.

Choose foods with high water content like cucumbers, berries, citrus, melon, greens, and tomatoes. You can eat these foods as a snack or incorporate them into your meals.

Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks as they act as a diuretic, pulling water from the body rather than replacing it.

Carry a reusable water bottle with you that you can easily refill with tap water. You’ll save money and help the environment by choosing tap over bottled water. And try adding fruit or herbs to your water for added flavor without added sugar.

I realized one thing while doing Brenna's headshots - I don't yet have a foolproof way to make subject smile and / or laugh. I managed to do so with Amber and Jordan later, but 2 out of 3 is not a reliable enough ratio, of course. Mental note: work on that.

General backstory for this shoot: I watched Peter Hurley's DVD recently and wanted to try some stuff out, and got some friends together to help me experiment. We did some headshots as best I could, and some other random stuff as well. Definitely a lot I could improve on, that's for sure.

I cannot resist updating the firmware on my cameras even though it makes me nervous each time I perform the operation.

The procedure is simple and relatively foolproof. However, there are dire warnings that you could end up with a non-functioning camera if it does not work properly. To avoid that possibility I follow the instructions carefully by making sure that the battery is fully charged first and that on no account do I touch any buttons whilst the update is in process.

In case you were wondering, the process went through without a hitch. The question now though is, "will I notice any difference in the performance of the camera?"

I always have good results with the Mostly Foodstuff's whole wheat version of tortillas (originally from Saveur Magazine). It's one of the only things I use organic palm shortening in, and it does make a really good, near foolproof tortilla. Yesterday, I combined Deena's method with leftover pinto beans - I just added the beans (about 3/4 c. of mashed) to a little water and pureed them, then added enough water to equal about the 2 c. in the recipe. They are much more tender than the bean tortillas I've made without shortening.

The bottom of this bowl functions as suctorial disk. It is not foolproof.

Freshly dug from the garden this afternoon :-) When a friend gave us a dozen or so tubers, he did warn us that we would never be without artichokes again. He was right! We have an Artichoke Jungle which sends up 6 - 8ft tall stems topped with smallish and rather insignificant sunflowers (this is a relative of those stately plants). This bowl is actually 12" in diameter and there are well over 6lbs of artichokes within. I made some into soup, some went into a bacon/lentil/artichoke salad, some went to a friend who came for dinner tonight, another bag is destined for a farmer who runs the local Farm Shop, and there are still plenty left over for us later in the week. It's nice to have fresh homegrown veg in the depths of winter and Jerusalem Artichokes are virtually foolproof - they seem to thrive whatever the weather throws at them. Their only drawbacks are that some people don't like the rather strong earthy flavour and others find it gives them 'wind' and upset tummy. We still have probably twenty times this many artichokes still slumbering under the soil ready for harvesting. I'll put a few back in but there will always be one or two 'tinies' that escape the harvest and survive to grow another day .....
