Study shows reinfection protection for COVID-19 vaccines
A new study out of Denmark suggests COVID-19 vaccines offer good protection against reinfection in people who had already acquired the virus, sometimes up to 9 months. The study, which looked at protection offered during the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron waves is published in PLOS Medicine.
The study population included more than 700,000 people with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection who were identified in national Danish registries from Jan 1, 2020, to Jan 31, 2022. The authors estimated vaccine effectiveness (VE) for different variant periods, and by time since vaccination using unvaccinated citizens as the reference.
VE against reinfection following any COVID-19 vaccine type administered in Denmark peaked at 71% (95% confidence interval [CI], -Inf to 100%) at 104 days or more after vaccination during the Alpha period, 94% (95% CI, 92% to 96%) 14 to 43 days after vaccination during the Delta period, and 60% (95% CI, 58% to 62%) 14 to 43 days after vaccination during the Omicron period.
"Even though vaccination seems to protect to a lesser degree against reinfection with the Omicron variant, these findings are of public health relevance, as they show that previously infected individuals still benefit from COVID-19 vaccination in all three variant periods," the authors said.
New variants make VE estimates slippery
In an email to CIDRAP News, first study author Katrine Finderup Nielsen, MS, said the study purposefully excluded vaccine recipients who were infected less than 90 days before, but did not take into account booster doses administered after January 2022.
Gregory Poland, MD, of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, said the study confirms that vaccination offers protection against reinfection for at least several weeks, but new variants make studying VE difficult for researchers.
"The problem is this is a multi-dimensional matrix that consists of what you got infected with, which vaccines you've had, how many, how long ago, and what's circulating now," Poland said.
He believes that a previous natural infection with COVID-19 and two vaccine doses mean someone who is reinfected is very unlikely to die or even end up in the hospital with a subsequent case, but the risk of developing acute and post-COVID symptoms is real.
"The risk of long COVID is 20% to 25%. The risk of complications from acute infections vary from 20 to almost 100 per thousand cases," Poland said. "Remember, 1 out of 298 Americans are dead from COVID-19."
Warning before the holidays
Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, chief of Research and Education Service at Veterans Affairs St. Louis Health Care System, has published recent studies on reinfections in vaccinated people. His message is clear: "Reinfected people are still at risk for problems and long COVID. Reinfections are not benign.
"The virus is always outpacing and outsmarting us. We do a study on Delta, then Omicron comes out, but what we now see is the hybrid immunity of vaccine-derived immunity and natural infection is not a complete shield."
Al-Aly and Poland both said their message, though sobering, is important as Americans begin a 6-week holiday season starting with Thanksgiving tomorrow.
First, though not foolproof, both recommended that people get all vaccines and boosters on the suggested timeline as described by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention.
Al-Aly said he would advise wearing a well-fitted mask during holiday travel, and Poland says a proper mask is as vital to people as wearing a seatbelt in a car. Optimal protection is afforded by wearing a tight-fitting respirator such as an N-95.
"There will be people who will read this and they will be dead or in the hospital before Christmas," said Poland. "So we have to balance known risks and known benefits, and make choices based on data."

The Tachyon XC - Extreme Camera - is the latest- generation video and still camera designed for filming extreme action. It is extremely rugged and very simple to use, while delivering up to a full 30FPS of VGA video.
The Tachyon XC is shockproof, waterproof, and foolproof. Take it anywhere on land, into the sea, and into the air and bring back your stunts, adventures, and bloopers. It comes with a remote control and custom-designed mounting accessories.
A patented shock-proof battery system eliminates an all-too-common problem among other action cameras; the loss of power and recorded files caused by the jarring loose of the batteries. This innovation ensures that videos taken in challenging and perhaps impossible-to-repeat situations will not be lost.
The Tachyon XC is the only helmet cam that can make use of the full range of 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB SDHC cards.
And unlike other cameras which need to rely on an external waterproof case, the Tachyon XC’s housing is already waterproof, allowing you to film to a depth of 28 feet (8.5 meters) and protecting the camera from the elements.

Remember your foolproof plan? It turns out that HR is full of idiots, not fools, so they wrecked it.
The puzzle-piece joints are a pleasure to assemble -- much better than the butt joints I've used on a Pygmy boat. The puzzle joints seem foolproof. But, they're not. These were pretty tight, but, it's still possible to have a joint with some lateral movement, which could lead to some degree of imperfection in the hull shape. This time around, I opted to assemble the panels for the two sides separately.
When assembling the first set, one must sight down the panels and "make sure the lines are fair," as noted in the instructions. For the second set, the first set is used as templates, ensuring that the panel sets are mirror images of each other. This eliminates half of the "eyeballing," and potential variability.
The panels could be assembled without the weights, but, it seems something needs to be done to keep the joints as flat as possible. This requires an additional sheet of plastic at each joint, and a slab of smooth wood between the plastic and the weight. It also brings to light a problem when working with fiberglass tape: the tape has one bound edge that is thicker than the tape, itself. When it's wetted out and weighted, there will be an area of thicker epoxy along that bound edge. That's wasted epoxy that should be sanded down so as to not add weight and inelegance. The solution is to cut off the bound edge off of each piece, when preparing the tape.
A lot of 3-inch glass tape will be used on the inside seams of the panel joints, where, again, the raised edge would cause trouble. When I cut off the bound edge, I intend to cut off an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch. This should save some weight and epoxy, and I do not think there will be any loss of strength.

NORMAL -- Tricia Reimer has trapped 17 stray cats in her Bone Drive backyard but there still are dozens of others who taunt her dog and use her backyard as a litter box.
Recently she saw yet another new litter. The kittens were so deformed, they could barely walk.
"It's been a really serious problem," she said.
But a possible solution is at least two weeks away.
The city council tabled action on a proposed cat leash ordinance Monday night that would have allowed animal control to trap strays and euthanize them.
Instead, members decided to study an idea that would mesh the work of animal control with that of the Sterile Feral Foundation. The foundation traps the stray cats, has them neutered or spayed and returns them to the same area.
"A leash law will not affect the overpopulation," said Sue Stelma, president of the foundation. "Trap, neuter and return is much more successful."
Stelma said once the cats are returned, the foundation provides them with food.
"They can't have babies, they don't wander and they won't let other (cats) come in" the colony, she said.
The method successfully reduced one colony of cats from 35 to 14, for instance, she said.
"Thirty-five to 14 is not something I want in my neighborhood," said Councilwoman Sonja Reece. "That doesn't keep them out of the sandbox or garden ... there's still a potential to be a nuisance animal."
Councilman Adam Nielsen said he's received several calls about stray cat colonies over time.
"It blows my mind we haven't been able to help," he said. "I'm ready to take action."
But Mayor Chris Koos said while he is bothered by the problem, "I'm hearing a number of strategies.
"We need to take time, to study, get better information on what can be done."
McLean County Health Department Bob Keller said animal control cannot do anything about stray cats without a local ordinance because state law does not prohibit cats from wandering.
If animal control caught cats without a local ordinance backing it up and the cat turned out to be someone pets, Keller said the department would be liable.
Town attorney Wayne Karplus said that is part of the problem -- knowing what is a feral or stray cat and what is a family pet.
Karplus said while the Sterile Feral Foundation works particularly well on cat colonies that hang around restaurants, its not as effective in neighborhoods because the food source can't be controlled.
"It could take years to catch them all," he said.
"It sounds like there is no method that is foolproof," Nielsen said.
Nielsen and Councilman Jason Chambers voted against tabling the issue. While Koos suggested the council give town staff up to 30 days to consider an alternative ordinance, Councilman Parker Lawlis said residents living with the stray cat population shouldn't have to wait more than two weeks.
City Manager Mark Peterson said staff could come back to the council within two weeks but he wasn't optimistic a solution could be worked out using both animal control and the Sterile Feral Foundation.
Who doesn’t crave a beach party with a nice, cool, small, and compact deflated stand-up paddleboard along with a bunch of friends on a summer afternoon? Inflatable paddleboards are easy to carry, travel friendly, cushion companions are highly durable to withstand the water pressure every time. These tough yet foolproof paddleboards find their use in various boat sports such as surfing, windsurfing, and kayaking. The growth in demand for inflatable paddle boards is because of their compact nature as compared to their counterpart, i.e., hard paddleboards.

This is on my Left wrist, As u can see from the stencil for some reason It didnt turn out like the stencil huh? The guy that owns my tatt shop Designed this for me, Not the guy that does my Tats but his boss and I loved it but The guy that did it made it look so Different!! I had this designed cause I wanted script that was just one line writing and he did it to where there is empty spaces In between the letters, see what I mean?? I wanted it just like the stencil looks and he managed to do something tottaly different!!look at the diff in the C and the T. What the hell??? I LOVE my tatt artist and he has done all 19 of my tatts and I love evey single one but how did he screw this up when all he had to do was trace!!I searched for The script I wanted this in for over a month and would not settle because I wanted the script to be sooo pretty and I waited until I found the perfect script befor I would get this tatt and I was so picky about it that I could not find something good enough after a month. I wanted the script to be one lined instead of outlined, I wanted it to be in cursive, I couldnt find a script I liked and I would not settle for one I didnt and I found one that gave me the idea of how I wanted the script and I showed it to the owner of the tatt shop and asked him if he could write my name similar to that But I wanted my own uniqueness tio it and I wanted the T to look like a cross because I am a Christian and I have always wanted a cross tatt but couldnt decide how to do it or where to put it where it would look classy and not trashy. so he drew this up for me(what you see in the stencil) and I loved it, I loved the C and The T was Beautiful, I loved how he made it look like a cross and made it look so awesome, I was super excited to get it but what I got was a completly different script that I wanted!! Look at the difference!! How could he mess that up? it was foolproof!! But some how he made it into a piece of crap and the T dont even get me started on the T!! The stencil T was My fav and I LOVED it, I was so excited about That T/Cross. look at the diff in the T's, It Is NOTHING like I wanted, It doenst even look a Ceoss!!! I couldnt believe it. Now I do NOT regret a single tatt on my body and LOVE every single one of them but this is a huge dissapointment. It is the worst work I have ever seen my artist do and It was so SIMPLE, I have seen him free hand HUGE tatts and They are beautiful. How did he manage to do THis!!!! I think he might have been stoned that night or something cause there is NO WAY u could mess this thing up but somehow he managed!! And Now I wasted perfectly good space on my skin. I have my hubbys name on my right wrist and wanted mine on my left to match his and now its just horrible. and I dont wanna cover it cause like I said I got my name to match his on my other wrist and There is NO fixing this, I dont think it can be fixed. It makes me sad :(
I have developed a method to create complex virtual bodies of boats and cars, all based on only 4 curves in space. This is a design process outcome, and serves the design community as a tool for creating cars, boats, and a number of other things. I will keep experimenting with this until it is foolproof, but already, it can be used to create shapes like shown here in under 5 minutes.

This species is a regular visitor, usually arriving in flock sized numbers. These birds are usually spotted in large flocks; they swarm over my thistle feeder in a tumbling mass, and usually perch close enough to permit great photo ops. They are plentiful during high summer and typically ignore my presence, some even landing on my focused camera! Sexes are determinable... but it's not foolproof, especially for first-year birds (and first-year birders)!

This year, 2026 is the centenary of the formation of Zeiss Ikon, a major player in European camera manufacture in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the 20th century.
To mark this anniversary, I've decided to use a different Zeiss Ikon camera every two weeks throughout the year, a project I'm calling “Twenty-six in Twenty-six”.
Zeiss Ikon launched their series of Contaflex cameras in 1953. Over the following 20 years or so, twelve versions were made with ever increasing degrees of sophistication and indeed weight. A wide range of accessories was available, and these precision made leaf shuttered SLRs proved very popular. The Contaflex 126 is a different beast altogether, it may share the name and bear a superficial resemblance to the rest of the family, but it's something of a cuckoo in the nest.
Kodak introduced the 126, or Instamatic cartridge in 1963. It was intended to provide a simple, foolproof way for a growing numbers of less technically savvy users to load film into their cameras. Although the film is 35mm wide, the format is not the same. The film, which has one perforation per frame and sits within a plastic cartridge, is backed by a roll of paper, and gives square negatives measuring 28 x 28mm. Until very recently Instagram's native format was square, and it may be that the name itself was riffing on the Instamatic brand.
While the format was unashamedly aimed at the amateur snapshot market, many of the major manufacturers added a token higher end SLR 126 model to their range. This is a bit of a puzzle to me, one criticism of the 126 cartridge is that the absence of a pressure plate to keep the film absolutely flat might theoretically impair the image quality, yet surely any photographer with such technical concerns wouldn't be put off by the easily learnable step of loading a 35mm cassette into a camera. Nonetheless, Rollei, Kodak, Ricoh and of course the prestigious Zeiss Ikon, felt the need to pitch in.
Unlike the “normal” Contaflexes, which at best have interchangeable front elements, the 126 version has fully interchangeable lenses, though with a mount which is unique to this one model. Optical physics dictate that the longest practical focal length that can be achieved by swapping the front element is 115mm, but the 126 range of lenses went up to 200mm, though it seems that very few of these lenses were actually made. The other key difference between the 35mm and 126 Contaflexes, is that the latter employ a focal plane shutter rather than the traditional leaf shutter.
Today, with the only 126 film available being long expired, it's actually quite useful to be able to set the camera manually. The oft quoted rule of thumb that film loses sensitivity at a rate of one stop per decade, means that an ISO 100 film made in the 1970s would need to be exposed at around ISO 3 today. Most consumer Instamatic cameras won't allow this, but using an aperture of f2.8, and the shutter speed of 1/30th, it's practical to use the Contaflex 126 in reasonable daylight. The film is very expired Fujicolor Super HR 100, developed in the Bellini C41 kit.
