a fool mask on a old house in Trieste

Nairn, an ancient fishing port and market town east of Inverness.

Nairn also has miles of great beaches but it was these rocks by the harbour, with the yellow seams looking like gold that caught my eye, with strong winds and choppy seas the long exposure worked just right.

A Set recreation from Only Fools and Horses

Chris Hughes and I arrived at Alexander Hacke’s studio to do a film interview with him for the Fatal Shore film documentary. Alexander was always very supportive of The Fatal Shore. He was always seen at most of their concerts from their very beginning in Berlin, but then again Alexander has always been a shining light of support and creativity for most musicians and music lovers in Berlin. Alexander first joined Einsturzende Neubauten when he was 15 in 1980.He first played guitar, switched to playing bass in the 90´s and the rest is history. He put out his first solo album out in 1992 called “Filmarbeite”. He has played with The Jever Mountain Boys proving his versatility playing country and western music. In 2000 he travelled throughout Europe and North America with a mobile recorder collaborating with various artists to create what is known as the road record called “Sanctuary”. This was documented by the artist Danielle de Picciotto. Danielle and Alex went on to do many creative collaborations together creating a series of brilliant music performances such as “Ship of Fools”, “History of Electricity” and in collaboration with The Tiger Lillies, “The Mountain of Madness”. Alex has contributed to numerous film scores and has produced the music for Fatih Akin´s award winning film “Head On” and is the main character in Akin´s documentary of the Istanbul music scene “Crossing the Bridge” the sounds of Istanbul.

PCA184 – Low Key

Sunday, November 20 - Sunday, December 4, 2011

Image Tag: pca184

We tried this 96 assignments ago. Let's give it another shot.

The assignment is to photograph any subject using low key lighting style. Low Key photography is dominated by black, and highlights are used to paint in the detail. Its more than just an underexposed photo, and its more than just a black background. Low Key should have some amount of pure white or at least highlights in it, and usually does not have a lot of middle-gray. Some research on the web will quickly show that there is a wider than expected definition to low key so some studying may be in order.

WIT:

A shamelessly sentimental photograph of me fooling around with my wife.

The setup was similar to last week except the light was above us and slightly behind. I was inspired to do this by a film poster that I saw coming out of the cinema tonight. It took me a while to figure out how the light was positioned to light both the actor and actresses faces - Anne pointed out that it must be above and behind them because the actress was looking back and up at the actor.

It is quite tough to get the focus right when you are also in the shot. I used my little 50mm f1.8 prime lens (best value for money ever!) and set the aperture at f7.1 and experimented with exposure till I got the right shot.

I would have liked to have had more light in the eyes but a reflector brought in too much light and spoiled the low key effect for me.

I did some tweaking in photoshop to remove stray hands and trouser legs that seemed to add confusion to the shot - it isn't obvious that I am sitting behind Anne (who is kneeling) so it was a little confusing to see a knee sticking out there.

I had Woodland cut me a logo, since I'm pretty sure I could never hand-cut something like this as well as their CNC machines. Turned out pretty nice, IMO. Set me back $46, but still. This will be going on the backdrop, which is rusting nicely now.

My third piece from my Fool Me series. There's been a lot about the child molesting priests in the Irish news recently. This sums up my thoughts on the matter. If you view it large you can see that the wafer has a certain symbol on it.

layer styles applied on the words on several layers .

Wordle is a program , ( Java applet ) that generates “word clouds” from any text that you provide.

The clouds give greater prominence to those words that appear more frequently in the source text.

This seems like a useful tool for providing a quick overview of the main concepts addressed in a text.

We had fun on April Fool's. No coffee?! That's a cruel joke

Why the Fool? Because this was the very last shot I took with my demo Carl Zeiss 2/50 - and I was a fool for trying, now that I HAVE to buy it. ;) But this is a pure SOOC - no crop, no color adjustment, no nada! I took this for my Lenscrack group ( www.flickr.com/groups/lenscrack/ ) - in which this month's assignment is SOOC. Nikon D700 + Carl Zeiss 50mm The journey is the reward. Please, no group invitations or badges.
