Fonthill, Mercer's mansion, constructed early in the last century.

This is the driveway to Fonthill.

It was so incredibly foggy today, Larry and I debated going on our outing to the Mercer Tile Works and the Fonthill Museum, but decided that the fog might really add to the atmosphere of the place.

We took a tour of the Tile Works, and I took plenty of pictures...inside and out, which I'll post later. When we were done at the museum we decided to walk around the outside of Fonthill, which is on the same property.

Standing at the foot of the main driveway to the house today, you'd never know there was a huge mansion at the end of it!

In 1907 Henry Mercer inherited a large amount of money. He spent the next three years building Fonthill, an eccentric masterpiece. He used concrete, but in an unusual fashion. He and his workmen formed the structure a room at a time, building an interior frame from earth and wood. Decorative tiles, furniture, and other architectural elements were then placed on the surface, and concrete poured around and over them. Once the concrete hardened, the supporting earth was dug out, leaving a solid structure with inset decorations.

Abandoned house in the woods behind Fonthill Museum. I met a woman walking her dogs and she pointed to a path and said, “Follow it!” The inscription on the eves of this old house reads: “Who Learns will Love and not Destroy the Creatures Life the Flowers Joy.” Photo courtesy of Michelle Alton, Yardley, PA.

The Central Camp-Petawawa hammer shown above (measuring 23.5mm) was the third circular military type used in Canada. It was of the c.d.s. style.

The "broken circle" Brigade Camp hammer of 1886 and the similar Aldershot hammer of 1905 preceded it.

It is considered most likely that a 1906 date for Central Camp Petawawa will prove to be the earliest reported date of use.

It is of interest to note that a Canada Militia type hammer was proofed June 23, 1910 for Petawawa Camp (measuring 27.5mm in diameter). Present knowledge of dates shows an overlap of the two hammers by seven weeks. The earliest reported date for this hammer is June 25, 1910. I have a June 24, 1910 (AM) - date - which is the earliest possible date for this hammer.

A considerable number of cancellation dates for the Central Camp-Petawawa hammer have been recorded from a variety of sources.

These dates are:

1906 - AUG.20 (erd), AUG.23 (my copy), AUG.29

1907 - AUG.5, AUG.12, AUG.13, AUG.14 (x3 / 2 are mine), AUG.17, AUG.19 (x2), AUG.20 (x2 / 1 is mine)

1908 - SEPT.14, SEPT.15

1909 - JUL.16 (my copy), JUL.22 (my copy), JUL.26 (x4), JUL.28 (my copy), AUG.4 (x2), AUG.15, AUG.17 (x2)

1910 - JUN.15 (Petawawa duplex - emergency hammer / (my copy), JUN.18 (RPO / my copy), JUN.22 (my copy), JUN.23 (my copy), JUN.24 (F.P.O. / my copy), JUN,25 (F.P.O.), JUN.29 (F.P.O. / my copy), JUL.11, JUL.17 (my copy), JUL.18 (x2), JUL.25 (x2 / both mine), JUL.27, JUL.29, AUG.2 (my copy), AUG.8, AUG.10 (lrd), AUG.11 (AM / no year but confirmed on postcard / the new LRD / my copy), AUG.11 (PM / Petawawa duplex - emergency hammer / my copy)
