EXPLORE

Fonthill Castle, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was the home of the archaeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer. park around the building is very picturesque.

Salisbury Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican cathedral in Salisbury, England. The cathedral is the mother church of the Diocese of Salisbury and is the seat of the Bishop of Salisbury.

The building is regarded as one of the leading examples of Early English Gothic architecture. Its main body was completed in 38 years, from 1220 to 1258.

The spire, built in 1320, at 404 feet (123 m), has been the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom since 1561

An unusual feature situated in the Nave is an unconventional modern font, installed in September 2008.

Designed by the water sculptor William Pye, it is the largest working font in any British cathedral, It is cruciform in shape, and has a 10-foot-wide vessel filled to its brim with water, designed so that the water overflows in filaments through each corner into bronze gratings embedded in the cathedral's stone floor. The project cost £180,000 and was funded entirely by donations

Great for reflections too!

Ok, another version of this old platform, this time in portrait mode. I think I prefer this one over the landscape version as there is less clutter and the portrait composition actually helps with leading the viewer into the image more.

In other news expect some lightning images in the next week as I went out last night in a pretty epic lightning storm here in the UK (for us anyways!).

Also dont forget my Youtube channel which you can find here

Something a little different to the usual green stuff I post!

There wasn't much colour in this image to start with so it was crying out for a high key edit imo.

I think its turned out okay but let me know what you think in the comments! Btw that bloody swan took ages to get into the position i wanted.

Autumn colours. A very mild autumn hasn't provided the true colour of autumn this year.

The Mercer Museum is a museum located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The Bucks County Historical Society operates the Mercer Museum, as well as the Research Library, and Fonthill Castle, former home of the museum's founder, archeologist Henry Chapman Mercer. The museum was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972,[1] and was later included in a National Historic Landmark District along with the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works and Fonthill. These three structures are the only poured-in-place concrete structures built by Mercer.

Henry Mercer was a gentleman anthropologist. On a cruise up the Ruhr in early adulthood, Mercer was impressed by the eclipse of artisanal culture by industrial production, and resolved himself to preserving artifacts of preindustrial life. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mercer collected pre-industrial hand tools and other implements of the past. He believed that the story of human progress and accomplishments was told by the tools and objects that people used and saw these time-honored crafts slowly disappearing from memory.

Mercer personally designed plans for a museum to house his collection, six stories tall and cast of poured-in-place concrete. Mercer's museum was completed in 1916. In addition to tools, it displays furnishings of early America, carriages, stove plates, a gallows, antique fire engines, a whaleboat, and the Lenape Stone. The Spruance Library, which houses the Bucks County Historical Society's archive of historical research materials, is located on its third floor.

Ooo thats such a sci fi title huh? Well. I am a sci fi nut so no apologies there lol. I kind of love this image even though its ruined by the presence of that digger, it kind of enforces the beauty surrounding it rather than detracting don't you think?

I mean, I could have cloned it out and was very close to doing so but decided to keep it in for the reason above. This lake has some stunning autumnal colours but its not quite there yet, another couple of weeks maybe? However the pastel tones of this stunning sunrise make up for the lack of oranges and yellows so I am still happy with it overall.

I must admit, this day of photography back in April was probably my most productive one for a while. I am notoriously hard on myself when it comes to my images and although I may take 100 plus photos in a session rarely do more than 2-3 make it on here and even then only one might be what I consider to be good.

This visit to Fonthill lakes and Grovely woods though has produced at least ten images that I have put about on various platforms and been happy with all of them. Whether that means I am improving as a photographer or I just got lucky I don't know but hey ho. This is one of the witches trees at Grovely and my personal favourite of the three. Its not the biggest or the showiest but somehow it has a presence that the other two just don't share. Its more integrated into its surroundings than the other two, making it feel like its less aloof than its two sisters which occupy more open areas. I particularly loved the light here on this morning, soft and gentle just like a famous conditioner!

Sorry once again for no videos I am not struggling to find the 4 hours in the week when i can sit down and edit them at the moment and I don't see it improving anytime soon so could be a few weeks before I post another one.

Swallow, taken at Fonthill Bishop in Summer of 2017

I had a little incident on this rickety old fishing platform last summer which resulted in me breaking my ten stop Nisi filter and nearly losing my Z6 in a lake for the second time (I was not the owner when it happened the first time-see my bio).

However this time I took no chances and stayed on terra firma to get this shot. We were on our way to a localish woods when we spotted mist hanging around this area and decided to stop to grab the sunrise here. Turned out to be my best session here with some really nice light!

Please take a look at my latest Youtube video if you fancy watching me make bad videos about what I do and how I do it!

Protection

Karoly Veress

Sculpture - 1985

Robert S.K Welch Courthouse

59 Church Street St. Catharines

Installed to the right of the main walkway into the St. Catharines Courthouse is a powerful abstract sculpture by Kàroly Veress. It stands approximately ten feet (or 3 meters) tall. The sand cast bronze with mottled brown and verdigris patina belies the metallic nature of its construction as its form mimics an energetic movement upwards. Veress emigrated to Canada in 1978 (he exhibited several works at Rodman Hall Art Gallery at this time), officially settling in the Niagara region in 1980. A native of Transylvania (he was born in 1935), he fled Budapest during the Hungarian revolution for Holland. Originally a student of literature at the University of Budapest, he switched to studying art at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. His artistic career flourished in Europe in the 1960s and 70s. The Dutch and German governments have both purchased his works, but an unexpected patron was Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, who also sculpted. He and his wife Margot currently divide their time between Fonthill and Hungary. Veress’ large sculptures are very informed by his experience of World War II and life behind the Iron Curtain, but they also have a universal nature that engages with viewers beyond his specific history. His titles are often single words, and very open to different interpretations. His works are very popular in Niagara, and 13th Street Winery (1776 Fourth Avenue, St. Catharines) has no less than six Veress pieces around their grounds, as an integral part of their impressive collection. Protection is part of the Government of Ontario Art Collection, and was placed here in 1985. Standing in front of this weathered work with a patina both burnished and faded, you can look to your left and just barely catch a glimpse of Anne Allardyce - Tully’s Eumenides, which was installed at the same time as a sister piece at the St. Catharines Courthouse.

Built between 1908-1912, Fonthill was the home of Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930). Archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramist, scholar and antiquarian, Mercer built Fonthill both as his home and as a showplace for his collection of tiles and prints. The first of three Mercer buildings in Doylestown, Fonthill served as a showplace for Mercer’s famed Moravian tiles that were produced during the American Arts & Crafts Movement. Designed by Mercer, the building is an eclectic mix of Medieval, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles, and is significant as an early example of poured reinforced concrete.
