Henry Chapman Mercer was historian, archaeologist, collector and ceramist -- a Renaissance man of the early 20th century. He was born and died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, at the heart of historic Bucks County. Fonthill, built between 1908 and 1910, is a testament to Henry Mercer's vivid imagination. He designed it, "room by room, from the interior, the exterior not being considered until all the rooms had been imagined and sketched," Mercer wrote. The result was spectacular. The structure is distinctly etched in the historically significant architecture of Doylestown, Pennsylvania and the collective memory of generations of visitors.
Built entirely of hand mixed concrete, Fonthill has 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 stairwells and more than 200 windows of varying size and shape. The National Historic Landmark contains more than 900 prints and other objects that Mercer gathered throughout the world, creating an intensely personal statement of his genius. The lavishly embellished interior surfaces show an incredible array of Mercer's original decorative tiles.

I love to visit unusual places. Fonthill Mansion did not disappoint! ^_^
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk about in a
sandcastle? Well, that's what it feels like to walk around in the Fonthill Mansion. This structure isn't made of sand, but of concrete, and was built by the hands of its owner, Henry Mercer, and his friends over the course of four years. Inside, almost every inch of the floors, walls, and ceilings in the 44 rooms is covered with Mercer's tile. Even some of the furniture was made of concrete. If you're ever in Philadelphia, PA and have time
to travel about 10 miles north of the city, check out Fonthill Mansion and the Mercer Museum!
Some background info:
Fonthill was the home of the archeologist and tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer. Built between 1908 and 1912, it is an early example of poured-in-place concrete and features 44 rooms, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces and 10 bathrooms. The interior was originally painted in pastel colors, but age and sunlight have all but eradicated any hint of the former hues. It contains much built-in furniture and is embellished with decorative tiles that Mercer made at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement.

During a walk through the parkland at Fonthill Bishop, I looked up what I thought was an open embankment. At the top I could just make out the outline of some type of building shrouded beneath the biggest single growth of ivy I had seen on a man made structure. Climbing the bank for a closer look revealed an amazing structure akin to something out of middle earth. One could easily imagine Hobbits running around and Gandalf charging up the ridge on his white stallion. This shot is a three stitch panorma showing it's position in the landscape with the lake in the trees beyond. There are a few other closer shots of this grotto type structure on my stream.

Due to a points issue at Hazelhatch, all services had to operate via the Up Fast line. This gave the rare opportunity to step off a passenger train onto the Up Fast platforms (as any train calling at the four four-track stations serve the slow lines).
