Following my last few postings you may have thought the sun hasn't shone in the Lake District this week. This shot to prove otherwise showing blue sky and lake.

More sun ray goodness from Little Wittenham Wood. Love how the trees appear to lean towards the sun apart from the conifer that just stands and bathes in it!

Sweet Pea Farm - Nina in the woods beyond the big field

The 2023 firefall season seems to have been very brief. I snowshoed to Sentinel Dome on Friday, February 17, and it was cloudy that night and the following one. Before then, it was too early for an optimal alignment. I shot this on Sunday, Feb 19. On Monday, a huge storm blew in, ending the opportunities to photograph the firefall.

While thousands of people gathered on the floor of Yosemite Valley, only a few watched from the rim. 11 miles of snow travel from the nearest plowed road keeps out the crowds.

Following up to the previously posted vehicle photo, this is what the wait was for. The daily road freight is seen passing by as it makes it's long and often slow trek over the South Dakota high plains.

The tidal estuary of the River Dee near West KIrby attracts walkers who follow the ebbing tide out to Little Eye island with North Wales in the background.

Following a dozen minutes behind the northbound Ramble headed to Pittston led by steam locomotive 2102 was a pair of light locomotives running as train NQEX (Nesquehoning extra). 'Fast Freight' rebuilt SD50-2 5018 (acquired from CSXT and blt. Jan. 1983 as Seaboard System 8507) and an unidentified geep cruise north just south of MP 128 on Reading and Northern's Lehigh Division, the former Lehigh Valley Railroad mainline. They would follow behind as far as Penobscot where they would then couple to the front of 2102 to provide dynamic braking for the heavy sold out 14 car train on the steep descent from Solomons Gap down into the Wyoming Valley.

This is one of only a couple spots where the railroad turns due east allowing for properly lit shots of anything running north in the morning. This area is double tracked with the Norfolk Southern still retaining ownership of the parallel track to the right as their now little used Lehigh Line main.

Following an extensive bathing and preening session this amazing Osprey looked straight into my camera lens, stretched and then launched into the air. Although I was caught a little unawares, as I was just enjoying watching the precision the Osprey took in cleaning and preening, I was thankful that I managed a capture a few images as it headed back to it perch.

A repeat visit to Titterstone Clee Hill in Shropshire to photograph a sunset dipping over the majestic landscape that borders Wales to the west and the English counties of Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the southeast, and Herefordshire to the south.

The plan was simple photograph and capture the late evening sunset colours in the clouds as the setting sun dipped below the horizon, which would hopefully set the sky a wash of oranges, pinks and purples. Once again my trusty Pentax K1 camera was matched with the Samyang 24 mm F1.4 and the diminutive Pentax Smc - DA 35 mm F2.4 AL (which is fast becoming one of my favourite lenses)

If that wasn't enough I also wanted to make best use of my time on top of the hill to photograph the landscape and radomes in the blue hour; an opportunity to photograph the early evening landscape, in the cool blues using the DJI Mavic Air 2 drone to do some aerial photography, revealing details and textures that easily go amiss when from standard perspective.

Waiting around for a few hours more I then planned on filming myself photographing the night sky and milky way, by doing some astrophotography over the tops of the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) radomes using my Pentax K1 and duo of lenses, the Samyang 24 mm F1.4 and the Pentax Smc - DA 35 mm F2.4 AL . However producing the video content for this was a challenge and the absence of light made it impossible to really show you how I had my scene composed and my camera setup. So unfortunately the video and story telling was limited in this part, but still, the resulting images taken on the night once I got home and processed them, produced some very pleasing wide field landscape astrophotography photographs. I hope you like them as much as I do.

Elfreth's Alley

Following my footplate experience day on the Foxfield Railway you realise that the drivers role is pretty relaxed whilst being the fireman is all go. Not only do you shovel coal, but you also clamber about the engine when topping up with water, couple and uncouple the engine from the train and operate the ground frames etc. Here we have the fireman of 80080 operating the hand point to allow the engine to run round its train at Leicester North, Great Central Railway, 12th March 2022.

Locomotive History

The British Railways Standard class 4MT 2-6-4T was based on the London Midland and Scottish Railway Fairburn class 4, 2-6-4T, which in turn had a lineage back to the London Midland and Scottish Railway Fowler design of 1927. The principal modifications to the Fairburn design involved the reduction in size to enable them to fit into the L1 loading gauge. One hundred and fifty five locomotives were built split between Brighton works (one hundred and fifteen), Derby works (fifteen) and Doncaster works (ten). 80080 was built at Brighton works and entered traffic in March 1954, initially allocated to Plaistow MPD for commuter services on the London Tilbury and Southend line. In 1962 when this line became electrified it was transferred to Croes Newydd (Wrexham) and remained there until July 1965 when 80080 was withdrawn from traffic By January 1966 it had been moved to Woodham Brothers yard in Barry, South Wales where it remained for the next fourteen years succumbing to the ravages weather, metal thieves, and later preservationists removing parts. When the locomotive was purchased in the autumn of 1980 all non ferrous and motion parts were missing and it was no more than a skeletal hulk. Restoration to working order took seven years and was completed in October 1987 at the Midland Railway Centre.

The Kansas City Southern Railway "Southern Belle" business passenger train with the FP9 A-B-A consist languishes at the former pig ramp on Track 202 at CPKC's Knoche Yard following a round trip to Amsterdam the previous day. With no rested crews available to take it south, it'll spend all day here in Kansas City, leaving town before sunrise tomorrow morning on the return trip to Shreveport, LA.

Yesterday's trip was operated for KC Current, a women's soccer team that is sponsored by CPKC and whose stadium is named after the railroad. 10/12/24.

The following comes from the pub’s own information board.

The Coach and Horses' beautiful exterior stain glass windows marks this pub as one that is hard to miss. The pub was once connected at the first floor to another building. However, after its neighbour received considerable damage, the original building had to be pulled down. It was later rebuilt in 1933 for William Younger & Co.

Behind this pub lies a mysterious, spooky story, which will chill the bones of even the most fearsome of people.

In the eighteenth century, the story goes that a coach pulled along by four horses was being driven by a ghostly figure. Those who saw this ghostly ghoul told the tale that as the coach came closer to the building, they realised the driver was headless and the passengers of this supernatural coach were staring through the windows with their dreary skull-like faces.

The New York State Capitol is the capitol building of the U.S. state of New York. Housing the New York State Legislature, it is located in the state capital city Albany as part of the Empire State Plaza on State Street in Capitol Park. The building, completed in 1899 at a cost of $25 million (worth approximately half a billion current dollars), was the most expensive government building of its time.[citation needed] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, then included as a contributing property when the Lafayette Park Historic District was listed in 1978. The following year it was declared a National Historic Landmark
