Most of what is visible here appears to be oyster shell material, plus one dark glass fragment/sea-glass-like piece.

 

Identification

1) Left shell

 

A single oyster valve, shown interior-side up.

 

Most likely from an oyster rather than a clam or scallop because it is:

 

thick, heavy, and irregular rather than symmetrical

strongly layered

 

broadly elongated instead of fan-shaped

 

showing the typical rough growth accretions of an oyster shell

 

Oyster shells consist of two valves, and in many oysters one valve is flatter while the other is more cupped. Their shells are notably variable in shape, depending on where and how they grew.

 

Visible details in your specimen:

 

creamy white to tan shell

orange-brown iron-like staining along growth edges

 

a smooth inner surface with a darker, elongated adductor muscle scar area

obvious laminated shell buildup along the margin

 

That darker inner scar is consistent with the place where the oyster’s main closing muscle attached.

  

Oyster interiors often show a pale to purplish muscle-scar area.

 

2) Center shell

 

Another oyster valve, this time shown mostly from the outer surface.

 

This is the roughest and most sculptural piece in the arrangement. It shows:

 

dark gray to charcoal

weathering

pronounced folded ridges

 

stacked growth lines

 

a heavy, thick shell body

 

That crumpled, irregular relief is typical of oyster shells, which often grow attached to hard surfaces or to one another, causing very uneven shell form.

 

Oyster shell shape is highly variable and often distorted by crowding, attachment, and substrate.

 

3) Right shell

 

A third oyster valve, also interior-side up.

 

This one appears more bowl-like and worn, with:

 

pale cream interior

a rounded interior basin near the hinge area

 

gray-black weathering and attached residue on the margin

 

chipped edges from wear or breakage

 

The cupped form fits the general oyster pattern in which one valve is more concave and provides more internal space for the animal.

 

4) Bottom foreground shell fragment

 

A long, flattened oyster shell fragment or valve fragment laid horizontally in front.

 

It looks weathered and thinned, with:

 

long laminated edge structure

 

muted tan, cream, and gray bands

 

a smoothed, beach-worn appearance

 

remnants of the inner shell surface and darker stained areas

 

This piece reads as the most abraded shell in the group, probably water-worn longer than the others.

 

5) Dark rounded fragment at lower right

 

This is most likely a glass fragment, probably sea glass or a wave-worn shard of thick glass.

 

I would not call the exact original object with confidence.

 

Why it looks like glass:

 

one side is smooth and translucent

 

the opposite side is distinctly frosted

 

the edges are rounded rather than sharp

he interior shows colored depth that shell or stone would not usually show in this way

 

Authentic sea glass forms when broken glass is physically abraded and chemically weathered in water, producing rounded edges and a frosted surface. Common colors are clear, brown, and green, while darker or unusual tones can occur depending on source glass.

 

What the whole arrangement is

 

This is essentially a still life of marine beach finds:

 

several oyster shell valves/fragments

one weathered glass fragment

arranged on a warm brown/orange surface that emphasizes the cream, gray, and dark violet-black tones

 

Visually, the set has strong contrast between:

 

matte, chalky, layered shell

dense, ridged, sculptural shell relief

smooth/translucent versus frosted glass

warm background against cool gray and off-white subjects

 

Level of confidence

Oyster shells / oyster shell fragments: high confidence

 

Specific oyster species: low confidence from image alone

 

Dark fragment as sea glass / weathered glass: moderate confidence

 

Exact source of the glass fragment: insufficient information

"Fuchsia Cluster #2" by Patti Deters. Four hanging flowers and buds make for a pretty piece of art. The pinkish red and lavender purple blooms are big, soft, and very attractive in hanging baskets.
