Lacks chlorophyll, so it is a parasitic, specifically a mycoheterotroph. Its hosts include fungi in the Russulaceae family that are mycorrhizal with trees; hence, it ultimately gets its food from trees.

These rattlesnake are tiny compared to their cousins. This one was approximately 20 inches long. They are easy to miss since they spend their time curled up in ambush near on the ground (another common name is Ground Rattler), and though common in parts of the Southeastern U.S., very infrequently seen in Mississippi.
