So here I am laying on the sofa, chock-a-blocked with snot and coughing my guts up, I have the flu or something akin. Oh well, will be getting out of taking the Christmas decorations down then! Seriously, feel like poo and I was contemplating doing the 2025-265, then I thought nah, why would I want to put myself under this kind of pressure when my New Years resolution was to keep things simple and relaxed!

In 1918 the Spanish flu pandemic took 50-100million lives worldwide. My grandmother was a victim and died at the age of 26 leaving behind my 4 year old mother.
After over a week cooped up in the house recovering from this awful flu I just had to stretch my legs. I grabbed the camera and headed out to my local national park (a nice easy camping ground to wander around), I even managed a couple of nice grabs!

A return 4 day trip to RSPB Bempton on the 5th June with 3 Photo buddies. The weather was very cold for June, very unexpected.

Onshore wind, Brighter, but still bitterly cold in the wind.
The Northern Gannet on the left shows the distinctive Black Eye that occurs on Gannets that have caught Avian Bird Flu but have survived. The Gannet on the right has the normal Eye.
It is not known if the Black Eye will return to normal over time.
Avian Flu, or Bird Flu, affects poultry and wild birds.
The current outbreak is of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), which can cause severe disease and high mortality. This current strain has been devastating our wild bird populations in the UK since November 2021. It originated in poultry operations in China in 1996.
The most recent series of Bird Flu outbreaks ( 2022-2023 ) is unprecedented – the largest ever in the UK and worldwide – and has killed tens of thousands of birds in the UK alone.
Piedrasluengas es una localidad española del municipio palentino de La Pernía, en Castilla y León. Es el pueblo de la provincia palentina que se sitúa en la zona más septentrional de Palencia, básicamente en la divisoria con Cantabria.
Está situado a 1330 m sobre el nivel del mar, al pie del pico Peñalabra, en la vertiente sur de la sierra de Híjar, por lo que es una de las poblaciones más altas de la provincia
El mirador de Piedrasluengas está situado en el puerto del mismo nombre que conecta la localidad cántabra de Potes con Cervera de Pisuerga en Palencia. Ubicado en plena cordillera Cantábrica, en concreto en el Parque Natural de Fuentes Carrionas y Fuente Cobre-Montaña de Palencia, el puerto de Piedrasluengas se alza a más de 1.300 m. por lo que las vistas desde el mirador son espectaculares. Desde su estructura de madera se observa una preciosa vista de los picos de Europa, Peña Labra, el pico Tres Mares, el de Cuchillón, el valle de Liébana y el de Valdeprado.
Como curiosidad cabe destacar que el pico Tres Mares es el único de toda la península en el que nacen tres ríos que desembocan en tres mares distintos, de ahí su nombre. A saber: un afluente del río Pisuerga que unido al Duero desemboca en el océano Atlántico, el río Nansa que acaba en el cercano mar Cantábrico y el río Híjar que fluye hasta el nacimiento del Ebro que termina su recorrido en el Mediterráneo.

I’ve been having fun again with intentional camera movement again. This one is from a walk last week.
I quite like the porthole effect that you get when spinning the camera around the point it’s pointing at. But it’s difficult to do because your wrists, elbows and shoulders don’t articulate evenly. I guess you could also use a radial blur filter in post-processing but I tell myself that wouldn’t look the same!
Last time I tried this I discovered that pointing along a path could give some interesting results, so here we have another attempt. It’s not really one of the better ones of the set but it has the singular advantage that you can see a fence in it. Well, just. That means it’s suitable for Fence Friday. Yey!! Fence Friday pics are in short supply in my life.
The bank on the left behind the fence is another part of the fortifications of the Iron Age fort that I mentioned in my recent single tree and sky pic. So 2,318 years old, then. The fence is more recent :)
The basic image and blur was captured in-camera. I just tweaked the colour and contrast a bit post-snap.
I also decided to have a go at replacing the sky (it was an even white and a bit uninteresting). I convinced myself that it should be possible using just a fill layer and a blend mode without a mask. Well much like a monkey typing Shakespearean sonnets on a typewriter I eventually found a way that worked: a blue fill layer at the bottom with the picture layer above merged in Normal blend mode using selective blending (Blend If in Photoshop) on the blue channel. (Sorry if that sounds more gibberish-like than usual even for me. I am suffering from that dread lurgy which affects only the stronger sex: man ‘flu. Brain is distinctly absent lol.)

Man flu, a cold I guess by any other name, but an inconvenience. I'm at the back end of one and frankly I've manned up and got through it. I applaud myself
Went up the rock yesterday to take photos of the sunset.
Somehow one of the seagulls got really angry and started to attack me. He didn't touch me but flew round over round very close, even using some good ol' dogfight taktics like attacking with the sun behind him.
Well, didn't work on me, but I got some nice shots. This is my favorite one, capturing the excitement that was going on only a step away from a 400m drop.
