Walking on the lava flow. Much of which is obsidian.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the United States. It was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It includes 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. These photos are taken from the summit Paulina Peak 7,985 ft, (2,434 m). Just below us are East Lake and Paulina Lake and The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1,300 years ago, covers 700 acres. It is hard to fathom as you drive through the summit area that you are within a 17 square mile caldera at the summit of a 500 square mile volcano, a volcano that remains very active to this day. Newberry is both seismically and geothermally active. Geologists believe the caldera sits over a shallow magma body only 2 to 5 kilometers deep. Visitors see numerous cinder cones (over 400 throughout the area), miles of basalt flows, as well as rhyolite flows of obsidian.
Assignment 3 :: Video Sculpture without Video. Liza Stringer and I made a ElectricKinetic sculpture using an arduino to control the frequency of 3 switching relays. The relays allowed AC current to flow from a wall socket to multiple lightbulbs of various colors that were mounted inside the box. Liza added a Zooetrope that used an arduino to control the rotation of a motor to which the zooatrope was attached.

The dam is more than 26 meters high and the flow water 'drops' first to huge space made of concrete which after the flow continues to the river. Both flood gates were open at the night I visited the dam and drew 300-350 square meter of water per sec making as total 600-700 square meters.
On our way up to Aira Force we stopped at this little spot which set nicely just before the main waterfall.
The first light was shining on the bridge behind the waterfall which brings out some great detail!
This shot was taken with the lee big stopper at 100 seconds exposure, hope you like it! :)
The photographs in my set, "Weed Flower Micros," may appear to be close-ups of regular-sized flowers – they are not!
These are micro (macro) photos of tiny little flowers which bloom on ordinary weeds found in my lawn.
How tiny? The largest weed flower in the set is only, when measured across its widest part from petal tip to petal tip, 3/4" in diameter (19mm)!
Some of these miniscule flowers are so small that the entire blossom you are looking at is 1/4" in diameter (6mm)…or smaller! Again, that’s measuring from petal tip to petal tip across the widest part of the bloom!
The smallest part of a weed flower that I have managed to successfully shoot and achieve good detail in is a photo I made of a bud that measured LESS than 1/32" in diameter (0.7mm) across its widest part!
For size references I have included a photo of certain flowers and buds next to the head of an ordinary paper match, which dwarfs the blooms and buds.
It’s delightful to discover the beauty, complexity, and variety in something so small that it’s easily ignored, taken for granted, dismissed as a pest, or just downright difficult to see with the naked eye.
And it’s an even greater delight to realize that this incredible beauty has been growing wild in my lawn, year after year, right under my un-seeing eyes as I’ve repeatedly mown them down with my lawn mower, never realizing the unseen beauty that I was trampling under my feet.
I hope you enjoy viewing these as much as I do. I have a lot of fun making them for us to look at!

At the very end of the Natural Bridge Canyon there is this little creek that flows down a rock bottomed bed.
Headed down to the Royal National Park this morning with Mike, Ash and Jeff for a Southdside FOCUS shoot. Thanks to Mike for showing us a great location.
