We actually started to do the laminate flooring as the underlayment is still being installed (because it got slow due to our weird shaped floor layout)
For all the worry and warnings about how awful a job it is to cut laminate planks, it turns out the best (easiest vs quality of cut) is to use a jigsaw, a finish-cut blade for said jigsaw, and a steady hand. I returned to HD all the crazy-expensive "laminate" 10-inch saw blades (at $49 CDN a pop). The jigsaw was required anyways for the weird L-shaped and U-shaped cuts around walls and obstacles like the poles and near the stairs / door openings.
I did however heed one advice -- I did all the cutting of the subfloor tiles and laminate planks in the garage upstairs.. and that was a good idea.. the dust left behind afterward was like a small mountain in the garage and I end up using a snow shovel to clean up the bulk of it before using a broom. :(
All the crazy layers of flooring meant only one thing.. the final floor will be 1.5 inches higher than the unfinished concrete floor. I accounted for that from the get-go by hanging all 4 doors with this in mind.. so, all doors fit, mostly. :-)
Also, one sad note of caution: Laminate styles and colours come and go like last year's fashion. I bought the 40 boxes of these TrafficMaster Dimension planks.. this year I went back to HD in search of the reducers for the door openings.. and.. found that HD no longer carry this brand! Furthermore, online on forums and stuff people frantically try to find extra boxes of these planks to complete projects or replace damaged / flooded pieces. So the lesson here: buy 20% more than what you need for laminates (and save them for future replacements) and buy all the accessories (reducers, like) at the same time to ensure colour match and compatibility.
