Floor mosaics using tesserae made of minute stone cubes, ranging from one to four millimeters in the opus vermiculatum technique.

The Greeks used mosaics to decorate their floors in public places and private dwellings by using tesserae in many ways. Tesserae are the small pieces of stone, limestone, marble, glass or clay, which are cut in a small cubic form, hence their name. The Greek floor coverings became a complete tableau depicting plants, animals, geometrical designs and Greek/ Hellenistic motifs.

The Romans adopted also this art to cover their floors in homes and temples, as well as in their tombs. The Romans applied the same techniques as the Greeks. They also introduced new innovations in the manufacturing process.

Opened on August 9, 1995, the mall consists of nearly 1.3 million square feet over 2 stories. With space for over 80 tenants, the mall faced a decline in the 2000s when it lost many of its anchors and inline tenants. Notably, Dillard's closed its upper level and turned the lower level into a clearance center. JCPenney exited in June 2011 and Steve & Barry's, which was originally Goody's, went out of business and was replaced by a Sears Call Center. The Sears store at the mall went out of business in April 2012. In 2014, Belk departed for another location.

High Point University purchased the mall in 2011 with the intention of using it for educational space. In the mean time, the mall continued to operate, despite the loss of its tenants. After Sears announced that its call center would close in 2017, the High Point University president decided that it was time to pull the plug on the mall. The mall and its remaining 11 stores closed for the last time on March 10, 2017. Dillards still owns its building, despite HPU's attempts to acquire it, and is currently remaining open.

taken when was looking around the turbine hall of the tate modern with sgoralnick a few months back. basically doris salcedo has put a massive crack in the floor of the turbine hall and what a nice crack it is to, only problem is a few people found it to hard to have a look at the crack with out falling in it or getting there limbs stuck in it so its now behind a barrier. i fund this out when looking in to Meg Pickard's photo stream today. i reckon the same people who have the legs stuck in doris salcedo crack are the same people making such a fuss over flickr video.

New hardwood floor, using a poster print for more coverage. Liesel the Sexy Librarian is spending a night in, though she's so caught up in her research that she forgot to get changed once she got home. Or notice that some people might be watching.

How about a little help Phillip?

I would love to but you know how mom worries that my claws will scratch the floor!

Right.

Studio / Hamburg

The wooden floor was really nice in this studio. I used two natural light sources. One window behind me and the other one from above. Looks so nice, I love this shot.

Location

Vienna (Austria): Ringstraße [Ring Street] – Innere Stadt District.

Subject

This is the façade of the Imperial Hotel, a renowned luxury accommodation. The balcony on the lower side of the frame is on the first floor, and its windows have a story to tell. In the first years of 20th century, before World War I, a young man from a small Austrian town was searching for fortune and fame in Vienna. While waiting for them, for a period he worked as a day labourer at the Imperial Hotel. On 12th March 1938, Austria was invaded by the German army and annexed to the Third Reich. On 14th March, Adolf Hitler arrived in Vienna for a brief stay, lodging at the Imperial Hotel. He appeared, greeted by the crowd, from the first window on the left—the first on the right, if you are the beholders—of the balcony on the first floor. That young day labourer had found the fame he wanted as the Führer.

Kefalonia Greece is one of the most popular destinations of the Ionian Islands and the biggest island of the group. It is located between Lefkada and Zakynthos. The Greek Island has many wonderful beaches with fine sand and turquoise, bleach-like, waters specific to the island. Others of its many beauties are its picturesque villages, its National Park on its highest mountain (Mount Ainos) on which a rare specie of fir forest grows and terrific landscapes.

I'm not really much for taking pictures for their own sake. Most of the photos that I take are done for my comics. I want to get the body language of characters right, which means "acting" out the poses and taking a bunch with a self-timer until I get something I like - which is what I am doing here. I really don't like hanging out on concrete floors unless there's a particular reason - in this case, getting a high angle from a tripod that only extends to about 6 feet.

One of the many neon signs in Pike Place market in Seattle. The market houses the world famous Pike Place Fish stall. I remember reading a book called Fish many years ago where the idea was to make the art of selling fun. They definitely do that there- getting the crowd involved and if someone makes a sale, fish go flying!
