The entire 2,800 length of the dam is in the process of getting new rocks. This 181' tall flood control dam was built in 1974. The spillway is located to the west, far side, of the dam.
Finished in 1922, the 67' high dry dam is 2980' long. It can hold enough back water to flood 1149 square miles. A dry dam does not have any gates,,,strictly limited flow through it's openings. Built in response to the 1913 flood that destroyed much of Dayton, Ohio. Old National Road 40 was relocated down the Great Miami River to cross this dam. Since it's inception it's only used 65% of it's capacity. Well designed and A Promise Kept.

The massive Mill Creek Pumping Station is at the center surrounded by the 8th St. Viaduct and Rt. 50. The Cincinnati Southern Railroad Swinging Truss Bridge, crossing the Ohio River, goes to Ludlow, Kentucky. The farthest column of the bridge used to swing to open for river traffic in the steam era.

After a long summer drought, recent rains sent accumulated pollutants into the Nyberg Creek. This section of the creek runs past Shari's Cafe & Bakery. The small flood control dam provided the churning action to create the foam. The foam eventually dissipated.

Flow through flood control dam at this popular park above Dayton, Ohio. It's a flow through dam with no gates but limits the amount of water that can flow downstream. The designer of these dams,,,five rivers flow together above Dayton, was a genius.
We drove down to the Mount Morris Dam overlook at Letchworth a few weeks ago. Thanks to hurricane leftovers there was actually water visible behind the flood-control dam. Usually it is empty except for the main Genesee River channel. It was filled to the top back a couple decades ago when the hurricane remnants came in close.
Completed about 1950, the dam has paid for itself many times over.

Eight huge pumps keep the Ohio River from flooding Cincinnati. Located near the confluence with the Ohio River at the end of 28.4 mile long Mill Creek. Before it's recent clean up and stabilization efforts the Mill Creek was named "the most endangered urban waterway in America" by the American Rivers Conservation Group. Currently in need of a $115,000,000 upgrade.
The flood control dam is 181' high and 2750' long. Brookville is barely noticeable dead center of this image. Beautiful fall weather in this area.
A Corp of Engineer's flood control project built this dam and created the 2830 acre Caesar Creek Lake. A 7900 acre park surrounds the lake with 43 miles of hiking trails. Great way to spend Saturday.

A family of nutria (Myocastor coypus) have made this lush section of Nyberg Creek directly above the flood control dam their home. Diners at the adjacent Shari's Cafe & Pies have an unobstructed view of the goings-on here.

This is the east side of Forest Hill Park Reservoir Number Two, a flood control dam located in Forest Hill Park in East Cleveland, Ohio. The sheet metal spillway is to the right. At the bottom of the coulee is a storm drain entrance.
This dam, which consists of earth, fill, and construction debris, was built on the East Branch of Dugway Brook in 1963 as a flood control dam.
Although 90 percent of Dugway Brook and its East Branch are culverted, the limited above-ground portion in Forest Hill Park often flooded, rising from a trickle one or two inches deep to as much as three feet.
Severe flooding in the University Circle area in the late 1950s led to the construction of this dam by the city of East Cleveland.
The dam was inspected in 1991 and found to be in need of repair and modification. These were not made. It was inspected again in 2000, and again issues with repairs, maintenance, and operation identified. These were not addressed.
In 2003, the city of East Cleveland entered into discussions with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to determine if the dam was still needed, given the flood control improvements made upstream since 1963.
As of May 2022, ODNR was surveying the dam to determine its condition in anticipation of its removal.
