There is nothing to beat a Thunderbird with floats. When the first one came off the production line, I took a day off work and went flying with Dad. This has to be the greatest thrill on earth!

This was actually a Diet Coke float, not a rootbeer float. It was ok but rootbeer is better.

This week our team traveled together back to Floaters to examine the painting “Arizona Sky”

by Judith Campanero. The responses below represent input from each member. Our thoughts,

feelings, and answers to the questions regarding the painting “Arizona Sky” are outlined below.

DESCRIBE:

What is the subject matter?

The subject matter of the painting can be categorized as “Landscape”. It is comprised of green

foliage, plants, and cactus in the foreground, while mountains, clouds and a beautiful sunset sky

make up nearly half of remaining upper portion of the painting. The main subject focuses tends

to be on the sky.

What is the work about?

Visually, the work captures the beauty of the Arizona sky since Arizona is known for the

stunning and colorful sunsets and sunrises. We felt the work felt like it represented a symbol of

hope. Perhaps the artist Ms. Campanero, uses the sky to represent the hope of those in need, such

as the cactus reaching up to become part of the beauty and reaching higher to become part of a

better life.

What is happening?

The painting captures an instant in time. A brief beautiful moment capturing the colors of either

a sunset.

ANALYZE:

How was it made (technique)?

The technique used was light and shadow within landscape art. Ms. Campanero most likely

captured the painting by observing nature as it was happening, perhaps witnessing and

experiencing the sunset while she sat and painted.

With what materials is it made?

The best we could tell, the material used seemed to be oil on canvas.

What colors were mixed to create harmony/disharmony (monochromatic, analogous,

complementary)?

The colors used are a combination of complementary and analogous colors. The use of

analogous colors of orange and yellow help create the harmony within the sky, while the use of

complementary colors between the greens of the ground and sky brings the entire piece together.

What did the artist compose/arrange the work (symmetrically or asymmetrically)?

The painting is composed and arranged in both a symmetrically and asymmetrically manner.

When observed at a vertical central line, the piece becomes more symmetrical. However, if

observed at the horizon central line then it is less obvious. When perceived in a more technical

fashion, the painting becomes somewhat asymmetrical, as the sky takes up more of the space

throughout the canvas. However, there still seems to be a present symmetrical balance between

the upper portion containing the open sky and the strokes and paint of the ground.

INTERPRET:

What does the work mean?

The work appears to have a very symbolic meaning behind it. It appears that Ms. Campenero

focuses her work on empowering the soul. It seems that the cactus is representing the individual

to strive for a better life, perhaps reaching towards the sunset. The work also focuses on the

illustration of how beautiful not just a sunset is, but the Arizona sunset.

What symbols do your see?

The symbols we within the painting include the sunset, which symbolizes the end of a journey.

While a sunrise could represent the beginning. The sunset could also be the light on the horizon

and the beauty of life to strive toward. The grass symbolizes the nourishment that is feeding the

hope, and the cactus symbolizes the growth, standing tall and reaching towards the sky. The

mountains in the distance might symbolize the obstacles that are needed to overcome in order to

reach and fully experience the sunset. The clouds can also be a symbol for freedom.

What do the colors symbolize?

Our team has a mixture of views regarding the meaning of the colors. The green and blue could

either symbolize struggles, due to the cold nature of those colors or that the green might be more

positive and focus on nourishment, growth, and feeding the nature of life. The warm colors

highlighted in the yellows and reds seems to represent hope. The mix of blues within the sky

give a feeling of striving towards hope.

What emotion do you get from the work?

The emotions evoked within this painting gave us a feeling of hope, happiness, and calmness

.

What story does it tell?

Our interpretation was that of a story of hope and empowerment. Perhaps enabling a person

going through struggles, to reach for the sky or beauty within. Even through the rough times a

person can grow further and reach towards a better life by hoping for the best. Embracing the

support and nourishment, both physical and spiritual, one can strive and help themselves and

those in need to reach toward a better place.
