Color splash at Skyzone

“When the tides of life turn against you and the current upsets your boat, don't waste those tears on what might have been, just lie on your back and float.”

Southeastern Oklahoma float trip

Description: Shipley's float is drawn by four horses; each horse has a blanket with the Shipley name. Signs on the side of the float advertise ‘genuine Oliver Plows.’ On the float, two men in suits stand up front. Another man is in a costume with striped pants, a jacket and a top hat. In the middle of the float are a small boy and a man seemingly dressed in Wild West clothes. Bringing up the rear of the float, a man sits with a guitar. Underneath him is a sign for ‘F.W. Devoe & Co. oil colors’ and ‘Devoe lead zinc paint.’ A young boy in a suit and hat stands beside the back of the float. The building behind looks like a stable, and a house is in back of it. Transcribed from the back 'B.W. Shipley.' 10 1/2 x 8 1/2 in. black and white photograph.

Floatation that suspends the rig from above, rather than being added to short strobe arms, allows for a greater range of strobe positioning.

Even when the strobes are positioned low, the floats are above the housing, so it is easy to hold the rig in an upright position.

Tried my hand at 'floating'. First time really doing so, so excuse the little imperfections.

The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is held in Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku Japan during August each year. Nebuta are giant, wire-frame, paper lanterns shaped in various legendary and macho characters such as samurai warriors, demons, and gods. They are fantastic works of art dramatically illuminated from the inside. The floats are paraded along the main streets of the city near Aomori Station every night of the festival.

East Float

The photographs today include photographs of East Float including some from short jetties along Tower Road.

East Float dock, as I explained yesterday, extends inland from Tower Road towards West Float dock.

Beside East Float, on Tower Road, the photos show the Central Hydraulic Tower and its door. This tower is a 110-foot high, derelict pumping station and hydraulic accumulator that provided hydraulic power for the docks at Birkenhead. Completed 1863. Bombed during WWII, it was repaired but eventually closed. The tower is now being restored.

One of the photos shows the wreck of a ship close to the hydraulic tower. The wreck of the RV Sarsia is partially submerged and derelict in the East Float dock. It seems that the boat was built in Devon in 1953. She was a Marine Biological Association’s survey/research vessel in the 1960s, was sold in 1981 and was taken to West Africa and used there as an oil survey boat until 1986 when it returned back to the UK. She has been left here in the docks ever since not long after that.

Finally today, some of the photos show the new homes being built on the Dock Road side of East Float. I will be posting some more photos of that new-build tomorrow.
