Float planes constantly buzz the city of Ketchikan. I'm guessing we saw 50 or 60 in the hour or so we were there.
Floatation that suspends the rig from above, rather than being added to short strobe arms, allows for a greater range of strobe positioning.
Even when the strobes are positioned low, the floats are above the housing, so it is easy to hold the rig in an upright position.

The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is held in Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku Japan during August each year. Nebuta are giant, wire-frame, paper lanterns shaped in various legendary and macho characters such as samurai warriors, demons, and gods. They are fantastic works of art dramatically illuminated from the inside. The floats are paraded along the main streets of the city near Aomori Station every night of the festival.
About 17 people rode on NW PA Pride Alliance's float in Millcreek's 4th of July parade. There were about 110 units in the parade and about 20,000 people saw the parade.
This was the ninth year that there has been an LGBT contingent in the parade, and the 49th year for the parade.
Our float was very well received, with many folks smiling, clapping and waving along the parade route.
Many thanks go to Ben Heggy for bringing his flat bed truck and to Chris Dye, Sandy, Will Koehler, Daniel Thomas, Amy & Erin Terrizzi for setup and teardown. Thanks to Melanie Shubitowski for taking photos.

East Float
The photographs today include photographs of East Float including some from short jetties along Tower Road.
East Float dock, as I explained yesterday, extends inland from Tower Road towards West Float dock.
Beside East Float, on Tower Road, the photos show the Central Hydraulic Tower and its door. This tower is a 110-foot high, derelict pumping station and hydraulic accumulator that provided hydraulic power for the docks at Birkenhead. Completed 1863. Bombed during WWII, it was repaired but eventually closed. The tower is now being restored.
One of the photos shows the wreck of a ship close to the hydraulic tower. The wreck of the RV Sarsia is partially submerged and derelict in the East Float dock. It seems that the boat was built in Devon in 1953. She was a Marine Biological Association’s survey/research vessel in the 1960s, was sold in 1981 and was taken to West Africa and used there as an oil survey boat until 1986 when it returned back to the UK. She has been left here in the docks ever since not long after that.
Finally today, some of the photos show the new homes being built on the Dock Road side of East Float. I will be posting some more photos of that new-build tomorrow.
11 floats battle by playing Ohayashi music.
That is the most exciting scene in the festival.

The Float Stream had been around for many years. In 2017, this location was ruined in a flood. They moved. Now the new location is closed too, I'd assume a victim of the pandemic.
The sign maker was bad at his/her craft, don'tcha think?
It's been hot and humid here for days ... thank goodness for the pool ... we're practically living in it.

We created a political art float with friends and neighbors for the 2017 Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.
The Bamboodu Theater is a puppet show on wheels, starring Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head. A news ticker displays some of Mr. Trump’s latest fake news tweets.
Parade participants will be invited to sing along the inspiring poem on liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddling masses …”). Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to change the world through civic action.
We built this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country.
In this work session, we completed the float, draped it in black, painted and attached our liberty figure and the signs. Can’t wait to show it off at the parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.
I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors helped us bring this project to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.
Join your neighbors to keep democracy alive!
