Council maisonettes in Flint are scheduled for demolition. Tower blocks will remain.

The plastic flint holder is even more vintage than the cardboard it's attached to. Guessing the plastic holder design is circa 1930s/40s, the cardboard design is 1960s?

Quartzose sandstone in the Pennsylvanian of Ohio, USA.

The Pottsville Group is a Pennsylvanian-aged cyclothemic succession in eastern Ohio that contains nonmarine shales, marine shales, siltstones, sandstones, coals, marine limestones, and chert ("flint"). The lower Pottsville dates to the late Early Pennsylvanian. The upper part dates to the early Middle Pennsylvanian. The Lower-Middle Pennsylvanian boundary is apparently somewhere near the Boggs Member (?).

Shown above is a ridgetop outcrop of erosion-resistant quartzose sandstone in the lower Pottsville Group. According to Lamborn (1954), this is the Massillon Sandstone. In parts of Ohio, the unit is called the Dundee Sandstone.

Stratigraphy: Massillon Sandstone, lower Pottsville Group, upper Lower Pennsylvanian

Locality: ridgetop above Mohawk Dam's eastern abutment, northwest of the town of Nellie, western Coshocton County, eastern Ohio, USA (~vicinity of 40° 21’ 16.37” North latitude, ~82° 05’ 07.36” West longitude)

Notes: Flint stone (second to diamonds in hardness) & sharp; from France

Why?

1) "Resistance" doesn't wear out

2) Porosity of stone - so oxygen can circulate, & low heat (lower than 41C) won't degrade nutrients

Wales

Begun in 1277, one of the first castles to be built in Wales by King Edward I. Its most impressive feature is a solitary round tower, isolated from the rest of the inner ward. It features in Shakespeare's Richard II.
