Homestead National Monument exhibits a lot of different fences, including a variety of barbed wires. These limestone fence posts are characteristic of the Flint Hills region of Kansas, which stretches a little bit across the Nebraska border.

The only way between the two sides of town was through this railroad bridge...

Yesterday was a great day of dirt roads, rolling flint hills, distinctive stone-built towns, and evocative ruined homes and burnt out cathedrals.

It was a great day...

Happy Fence Friday, my flickr peeps! It's been long, long time since I've shared a fence. It feels good!

This beautiful scene is in northeastern Kansas. This image was takenjust after sunrise…only my niece and I were on this gravel road that sliced through the Flint Hills. Nirvana for me.

A spectacular supercell over the Flint Hills, near the town of Severy, Kansas Saturday, May 10th, 2014.

Thankfully I slept in Saturday morning and left late. Because of that, I chose to intercept a few supercells forming on the dryline east of Wichita, instead of the ones in Kansas City on the warm front. The structure on this storm was something out of this world! Will be hard for me to top it!

Macro Mondays. Stone

Flint is the state stone of Ohio (in the USA). There are many large veins of flint in Ohio. Many flint arrowheads made by Native Americans and it's not unusual for farmers and amateur explorers to find them in farm fields. There is also a State Park called Flint Ridge. We found these stones in a small quarried farm which is open to the public and sold by the pound. My grandkids had a great time digging and excavating.

Just been handed this piece of flint, not sure where it came from.

Flint corn is a variant of maize, the same species as common corn. Because each kernel has a hard outer layer to protect the soft endosperm, it is likened to being hard as flint, hence the name. It is one of six major types of corn, the others being dent corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn, and sweet corn.

For Macro Monday redux of 2019 themes I chose the "Handmade" theme. The knife was found on a Boy Scout trip many many years ago, probably in the Tehachapi Mountains in southern California.

I always forget people like the sense of depth a foreground in a picture gives them. Or, at least I’m told they like it. Here you go.

The last three percent of untouched Tallgrass Prairie left in North America is in the Flint Hills of Kansas and the Osage Hills in Extreme Northern Oklahoma. The Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie is clearly the last significant expanse of a unique prairie ecosystem and it needs to be protected and preserved for future generations.

The Flint Hills, in the eastern part of the state, fan out over 183 miles from north to south, stretching 30 to 40 miles wide in parts, the land folding into itself, then popping up in gentle bumps, with mounds looming far off on the horizon. Seemingly endless,

the landscape offers up isolated images — a wind-whipped cottonwood tree, a rusted cattle pen, a spindly windmill, an abandoned limestone schoolhouse, the metal-gated entrance to a hilltop cemetery. The hills are named after another native stone, flintlike chert that Indians used to make tools. Many artifacts have been found at area quarries.

The Flint Hills in Kansas and in Oklahoma are North America’s largest remaining tract of tallgrass prairie. The preserve is at its full glory in late spring, when yellow, white, purple and blue wildflowers pop up amid a sea of green grass. The grass is tallest, about waist high in the fall.

Flint corn, or Indian corn, is one of the oldest varieties of corn, a type that Native Americans taught the early colonists how to cultivate. Its kernels, which come in a range of colors including white, blue and red, have “hard as flint” shells, giving this type of corn its name. Flint corn kernels contain a small amount of soft starch surrounded completely by a larger amount of hard starch, which means the kernels shrink uniformly when drying and are dent-free and less prone to spoiling (and therefore ideal for autumnal décor). Despite its tough exterior, this type of corn can be consumed by livestock and humans, and is used in such dishes as hominy and polenta. (info-www.history.com)

With the Y119 turn from Saginaw on the drawbar, LSRC 6431 and friends pull into the former PM/C&O/CSX McGrew Yard in Flint, MI.

With the return train (and power) for Saginaw already staged at the north end of the yard, the crew will tie this train down and then hop on their return ride home. Lake State runs a tight ship, and this crew will get to sleep in their own beds tonight.

LSRC 6431 was formerly UP 4608, purchased by the Lake State in 2022.

A split open flint.

I have been a fan of the Prodigy for longer than I have been doing Art. Their music and videos have been a major inspiration of mine and frequently will listen to their albums while I am out taking photos or editing. I have even named some of my photos off of their songs as a way to pay tribute to their influence. Yesterday was a very sad and emotional day for me to hear about the passing of Keith Flint. He was a showman, musician, an icon. You will be missed.

Flint corn (Zea mays var. indurata) also known as Indian corn or sometimes calico corn is a variant of maize, the same species as common corn. In January 2018, I drove through northern Kansas, I saw many abandoned farms - almost all the country houses were abandoned. The small towns that I drove through were (at best) semi-ghost. The farm places almost all had open gates and there were few "no trespassing" signs. The people who farm these lands now live elsewhere and since there is no stock to keep fenced in why close the gate? I decided that I would go back when the weather was better but unfortunately it looks like I won't be able to make it - at least for now.

From my observations along US 36 this area has been completely devastated.

Just beautiful! I don't care what they say, the tallgrasses of the Flint Hills are just as beautiful as any tall Redwood tree.
