State Senator Mae Flexer joined state Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Sean Connolly for a tour of the veterans' OASIS center at Quinebaug Valley Community College. There are about 6,000 veterans enrolled in Connecticut colleges and universities; veterans use the OASIS (Operation Academic Support for Incoming Service Members) centers to meet, study, relax, talk, and to gather information on federal veterans benefits, the GI Bill, tuition waivers, disability benefits and more. This year, the legislature passed a law directing state colleges and universities to assess programming at OASIS centers, determine best practices, and report their findings, with the goal of standardizing and improving veterans services at all state schools.
